Flow to get filtered list of groups user belongs to

Scenario: Org has certain AD groups that begin with "DQ". I need a way to provide an email address and get a list of groups beginning with "DQ" that the user belongs to.

Tried Office 365 Groups, but 1) there is no way to filter by group name and 2) it doesn't surface all the group types we need.

Tried MS Graph Groups and Users and, while it returns all the group types, it 1) again doesn't provide a way to filter by name and 2) only returns GUIDs. I then have to make another Apply to Each call, feed it the GUID and get the name. For users who belong to many groups (only a few of which may start with "DQ", it takes a while to run.

Thought perhaps an HTTP call to an API would allow a filtered query, but I've been unable to confirm if it's possible, or what the syntax of such a call would be.

Any ideas from this brain trust? Searched existing content, but nothing on point. Any assistance would be very much appreciated!

You can try the following.

//Add the user's pricipalName/email in place of USER

https://graph.microsoft.com/v1.0/users/USER/memberOf/microsoft.graph.group?$select=displayName&$search="displayName:HQ"

I tried the following filter, but it wasn't working for me.

&$filter=startswith(displayName,+'HQ')

I'll give it a go -- as I understand from your post, the first method works but will find DQ anywhere in the name of the group, and the second method was you trying unsuccessfully to get only those that start with DQ, correct?

That's correct. If you could at least only return the groups that contain 'DQ" for the user, then use a Filter array to further filter down the results so only ones that actually start with 'DQ' are returned.

I'll have another look at the filtering tomorrow (1AM where I am) and let you know if I can get the second option working.

@grantjenkins - morning! Wanted to let you know I got the startswith working... Here's my syntax:

https://graph.microsoft.com/v1.0/users/USER/memberOf/microsoft.graph.group?$select=displayName&$filter=startswith(displayName, 'DQ')&$count=true

The only difference from yours is that there's no + before 'DQ' and there is a $count parameter that is apparently required per this snippet from MS documentation:

Brilliant - I did remove the + at one stage but was still failing. Crazy you need to put the count at the end for it to work. I tried a few variations yesterday, but still couldn't get there, so great you got it sorted 🙂
