Get the number of emails account from Join Operations

Hi All,

I was trying to get the count of the email accounts add in people picker field using power automate.

I used Select and Join to extract the array and used compose to get the length or the count of email address in the array.

The last compose return 1 but the join is separated by ";" should have few email addresses.

Thanks

@abymanutd I wasn't aware this was how your flow was set up. Thanks for the additional context.

To better understand what needs to be done to get the count of email addresses from the input, add a Compose action and insert the input dynamic content into the Compose action.

creativeopinion_0-1706628770165.png

Run a test. View the outputs. The email input will output the email addresses as a string separating each email with a semi-colon.

To get a count of email addresses you need to convert the string into an array so you can count the number of array items.

Remove the dynamic content from the Compose action and insert an expression. Use the split() function.

The split() function takes two parameters:

split([string of text],[separator])

Click on the Dynamic content tab an insert the input dynamic content. Add a comma and single quotes. Between the single quotes. Enter a separator. In this case it's a semi-colon.

To count the number of items in an array. Wrap the entire expression in the length() function. Go to the start of the expression by pressing the up arrow key and enter length with an opening parenthesis.

creativeopinion_3-1706628855776.png

Go to the end of the expression by pressing the down arrow key and enter a closing parenthesis.

Run a test.

@abymanutd If you want to return the number of people selected in a multi-choice person column—the Join action isn't necessary. Use the length() expression with the outputs of the Select action.

Are you looking to return a count of the number of people selected for each SP item? Or the total number of people selected for an entire list?

If you are looking to return a count of the number of people selected for each item—add a Select action inside an Apply to Each loop.

Ensure you are inserting the dynamic content of the multi-person column into the From field. In my case my multi-person column name is Multi Assigned To.

Click on this icon to switch from Key value to Map mode.

creativeopinion_1-1706576986905.png

Insert the Email dynamic content from the multi-person column.

creativeopinion_2-1706577022432.png

Power Automate will automatically nest the Select action inside another Apply to Each action. This Apply to Each action isn't necessary. Drag your Select action outside of the automatically added Apply to Each action.

creativeopinion_3-1706577044642.png

Delete the automatically added Apply to Each action. Insert a Compose action to store the count of people returned from the Select action. Use the length() function.

creativeopinion_4-1706577077853.png

Click on the Dynamic Content tab and insert the output from the Select action.
