How to populate a word document with images?

I am creating a powerapp application form that allows  users to take pictures. I want to however populate the images in the form of a word document to then send to the user.

How can i do so? So far, i can only populate a word document with text. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Hey @jaiyeko

Once yo uhave the binary content of the image in Flow, you can use the below format to populate that image in a word template with a image content type field in the template.ee33.png

You can refer to this blog on passing image files from PowerApps to flow using the JSON function. https://www.appliedis.com/newly-released-json-function-for-powerapps/

Hope this Helps!

Hi there

Thank you for your very helpful comment.

I want to allow users to take multiple photos and then populate as many photos they take into a word document. Is this possible? Can i use your method for this?

@yashag2255

Hey @jaiyeko

You would have to create those many number of fields in the Word Template first. And then pass all the images from Powerapps and loop through them to create individual files (and contentbytes as we have in the variable) now put all of them individually in the word template action.

Hope this Helps!

Hi @yashag2255 ,

Is there a way to acheive this using the array function and repeating section control?

Hey @sh020ho

Support for repeating control has been recently added and you can check that here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/connectors/wordonlinebusiness/#createfileitem

Hope this Helps!

@yashag2255 I was wondering if you could help me achieve this. I currently have setup a repeating section document but have not been able to pass images.

I have an unique Audit id for each file that is in SP doc libary and and images need to be pulled for that particular id , loaded into word doc and then saved/sent as a pdf report.

Can Someone please help me understand how to get Images from Sharepoint List through Power Automate and populate them in Word Documents. My List has a Thumbnail column and images are stored there. Thanks in advance.

In my case I have trying to import an image received in an e-mail. I found that the Set variable approach here no longer works; Flow will not make the object variable available for the image field in the Populate a MSWord Template action. The same code in a Compose works, however. MS certainly keeps you guessing!

I still do not have the image appearing correctly in the Doc - not sure why. But at least this gets the doc made so I can troubleshoot further.

Hi There MusicMan,

I was wondering if you were able to add the images via compose in Power Automate as you mentioned on 2-1-22?
We are just trying this now. Also complicated as we are trying to ad varying number of images to different sections based on a correlating ID. Any help would be appreciated!

Yes, it works with attachments, but not with images embedded in the e-mail message. I have not had time to crack that nut, yet. I'm sure it would require another Compose with some JSON work.

Hi Walter_Wego,

I am trying to achieve the same as you. Could you did it? Thanks!

Hi Everyone!

Populating Word documents with images can be implemented in different ways. One of them - is the solution that is already mentioned in replies.

But what if you want to populate a document with images in different sizes that do not always fit the document template?

I'm using an alternative third-party solution that allows images to appear correctly in documents or emails, no matter the source and size of the images. That solution is Plumsail Documents. It has a smart templating syntax that allows me to generate complex documents with images.

Read the article to learn the basic way to create a Word document from a template in Power Automate. After that, learn the syntax for inserting pictures into documents. Note: picture formatter can be used with resizing options, for example, {{value}:picture(100,100)} . Also, you can specify only the width parameter, and height will be calculated automatically to keep the image proportions. For example, {{value}:picture(50)} .

The solution is not for free, but there is a 30-day free trial, and no credit card is required, So you can try it without a problem and decide whether it is worth it.

Did you write this in the field that you put the image: variables('aa')?
I do the same if you have done this, but my image doesn't show itself correctly...

I finally figured out what was wrong in my case:

- The Microsoft Template action requires the entire object:

{
  "$content-type": "image/<insert-your-filetype-here>",
  "$content": "<insert-your-b64-here>"
}

That is unique for every other Power Automate action I've worked with over the past 5 years. Usually, you can just past in the base64 representation in the form of `$content`.

That took too long to figure out!

Hi, thanks it's help me to understand how to add images to the populate word template. I have 2 questions; 1 - the power automate won't allow me to add the variables to the Populate word template field. I added variables (variables('Pic1')) in the expression. Am I doing something wrong here?  2. As there is a limit of 10MB to use the Populate Word template connector, I assume if there are more than 60 images, this process doesn't work. thanks in advance.
