Is there a "permanent" loop until condition is met? DO until

Hello All,

Could you do me a favor?

In Power Automate, is there an action similar to a 'permanent' loop that continues until a condition is met, like 'Do Until,' but with the provision to run only for the last 30 days. My manager is looking for the permanent loop until the condition is met.

Ok multiple people filling out the same form at separate times, got it.

So why not have a flow that triggers "When an Item is Modified", condition check the "City Select Complete" column, and then send the email. Why does the flow need to be running since the item was created or for 30 days?

Are you saying you want a Do Until to continue running for more than 30 days? For example a single flow is triggered when an item was modified and the Do Until will continue for more like 100 days or something until a condition is met, like a time or something?

If that is the case, you should rethink your process or how to make flows trigger for different purposes. You do not want a flow trying to run for more than 30 days. Are you waiting on approvals or something?

@wskinnermctc Thank you for your help.

In do until, the max of count is 5000

and the max of timeout is 30days. But my manager wants to extend this one as a permanent until the condition is met.

Instead could you make a flow that was triggered When an Item is Modified and use a condition on the Task Status Value of Completed?

This way the flow will only run when the item is modified and the status value is Completed.

@wskinnermctc

The trigger should be the item is created. My manager used to use a SharePoint Designer, and he said he didn't like the power automate's limited functions compared to SharePoint Designer and asked me to find a solution.

I don't know what should be the solution...

That is absurd. Talk about stuck in a box.

I don't know what all you are trying to accomplish, but it can be done with Power Automate. There is a trigger "When an Item is Created or Modified" best of both worlds.

Might require change of thinking. Might require some learning. It won't involve the discontinued/unsupported SharePoint Designer at all.

Funny how someone (your manager) apparently needs help but already has all the answers.

If you tell me what you are trying to accomplish overall from start to finish, I think we could probably come up with a solution in power automate that handles it.

There is a form.

happyyear_0-1698259293273.png

  1. Choose a city from the options, such as NY, DC, or NA. (city select)
  2. Once the "city select" is done, mark it as complete in the "city select complete"
  3. The workflow will wait until the "city select complete" is marked as complete.
  4. Combining City Select and City Select Complete forms Set A. There are more than 10 sets like Set A in the actual form.
  5. If the city selected is N/A, the City Select Complete box will be hidden and remain empty.
  6. Once all sets of select complete are marked complete, HR will receive an email. However, if the city select is N/A, the city select complete box will be hidden and empty.

The problem is the abundance of numerical cases due to N/A. I've already completed creating a workflow using "Do Until." However, the manager expressed a dislike for the 30-day limitation of "Do Until." He knows how to use  Sharepoint Designer but didn't know how to use Power Automate.

Ok, I'm not understanding a couple of things. Mainly around how this form works. I don't use these types of forms, so I don't understand when triggers would occur.

Can you tell me - What actions creates a new item in the SharePoint list?

  • Do they complete the form and it creates a new item?
  • Do they do some of the form and it creates a new item, and then they are returning to the form/item later to perform these City Select functions?

What are these "Sets" that need to be completed? You said "Once all sets of select complete are marked complete" so like there are other parts that have some select complete function?

Is the "Set Complete" button an actual column in the SharePoint list, or is that some feature of this form?

I'm still not understanding why a flow can't be triggered on When an Item is Created or Modified, condition check the "City Select Complete" column, and then send the email. Why does the flow need to be running for 30 days?

@wskinnermctc  Thank you so much for your help.

What actions creates a new item in the SharePoint list?  Once person A creates this form first.  (Item in the list in SP will be submitted)

  • Do they complete the form and it creates a new item? Once Person A created this form and the person B will come back to the form and  fill out the city select and city select complete.
  • Do they do some of the form and it creates a new item, and then they are returning to the form/item later to perform these City Select functions? After Person A and B completed, Person C, D, F, G will come back to the same form and fill out other types of set A( other city select and city select complete)   Many people will fill out the one form.

Ok multiple people filling out the same form at separate times, got it.

So why not have a flow that triggers "When an Item is Modified", condition check the "City Select Complete" column, and then send the email. Why does the flow need to be running since the item was created or for 30 days?

@wskinnermctc The manger said The item is created should be the trigger. I don't have any solution honestly. Thank you for your help.
