The length of substring can't be longer than '33017' which is the length of the source string.

Hi all,

I get this error The length of substring can't be longer than '33017' which is the length of the source string.

I have set up a flow to extract the name of email sender, since the email sender is external i cant use the get my profile connector. So i have come up with this alternative solution which fails sometimes. please find the flow details below.

Cr1t_0-1689926827537.png

Cr1t_2-1689926895075.png

indexOf(body('Export_email_(V2)'),'From: ')

Cr1t_3-1689926930883.png

indexOf(body('Export_email_(V2)'),'To: ')

Cr1t_4-1689926961380.png

substring(body('Export_email_(V2)'),variables('FromIndex'),sub(variables('ToIndex'),variables('FromIndex')))

Cr1t_5-1689926987211.png

substring(variables('FromLine'),6,sub(indexOf(variables('FromLine'),'<'),7))

Cr1t_6-1689927041674.png

I used my personal email and it worked perfectly but when i used my co worker email it failed, dont know how to resolve this.

Please help thank you.

Hi @Cr1t

substring(body('Export_email_(V2)'),variables('FromIndex'),sub(variables('ToIndex'),variables('FromIndex')))

Here you are extracting the values more than the source value. So check the body('Export_email_(V2)') length which is 33017. Check the from index and second index values. Mainly check this sub(variables('ToIndex'),variables('FromIndex') value?

Example

substring('ABC',0,2) will return AB

substring('ABC',0,10) will return in error because the source text ('ABC') length is 3 only. It must be equal or less in that second parameter. Here I requested 10 hence it will fail to extract the data you want.

Thanks

Please dont take me wrong, i still do no understand whats the issue and how to resolve this.
Is the flow failing because of the body of the email or something else? can you helpe me resolve this please ?

Regards,

@Cr1t

I see you're in good company (@abm @wskinnermctc @ManishSolanki @Expiscornovus) to help with your expression 🙂

If you need a quick and maintenance free solution, there's also Encodian's Utility - Extract Text between Values action

AlexEncodian_0-1689932142111.png

Simply insert the action, pass the source string and insert the start and end value between which you want to extract target string from.

FYI:
- Currently it only extracts the first instance...we're releasing the action to search for an array of results soon
- Currently it only extracts the text between the values...we're updating the configuration to allow you to keep the start, end or both values in the result string

FYI – Encodian actions with the “Utility“ prefix only consume 1/20th of Encodian action count (apart from on free plan). For example, a Standard plan has 500 actions (so utility actions can be used 500x20 = 10,000 times)

Hi @Cr1t

You have FromIndex 3752 and To Index 3666.

Your email body length is 33017 and you are trying to get starting position 3752 which is higher than the email body length. Ideally both From and To index should be less than the email body length.

Thanks

The test which failed yestrday had "test" in the body of the email and it failed.

The test which was sucessful had "Please see the attached" in the body of the email.

Now i am worried that this solution might fail sometimes, i dont know any other way to get the name of the user who send email.
Is there a way to solve this issues, i have no idea how to solve it, please help.

Hi @Cr1t

Looks like you have a dynamic data which are different hence you can't rely on the substring() you doing now. Explain a bit more about the scenario and what data you want to extract. Please provide a sample data. I will look into this.

Thanks

@abm

Thank you very much. Here is the scenario.

Whenever a new email comes to a shared mailbox with subject line abc, i want to collect the name of user who sent the email, create a folder with that name and save all the attachments in that folder.

Since the email will be from external user, i cant use the get user profile v2 connector. Thats the reason i was using this method to get the name of the sender. Here is the work flow.

Cr1t_0-1689942305109.pngCr1t_1-1689942332972.pngCr1t_2-1689942369068.png

If you could help me with any different way to collect the full name of the email sender it will be really helpful. thank you.
