Add Points to Column on SharePoint List Via Power App

Hi,

I have created a reward app with x amount of classes, I would like the users to be able to add a reward by typing in the class name and adding the amount of points, then when they submit the reward (submit form) it adds the points they have entered to the current amount for that class. This is the current formula I have below for the OnSelect on the submit form button, could someone advise please? The SharePoint list is called 'Reward App'.

Patch( 'Reward App', LookUp( 'Reward App', 'Class Name' = DataCardValue4.Selected ), { Points: Points + DataCardValue13.Text })

Thanks.

Hi @Amik,

Thank you for your advice, I will check out their channels to learn more.

I have added that formula and amended this and it seems ok. I am still getting an error on the tick icon under the editform screen to submit the "Reward". Please see the current formula below for this, do I just need to remove the patch function?

With(
{
_existingvalue: LookUp(
'Reward App',
'Your ID' = 'Your Gallery'.Selected.'Your ID',
Points
)
},
Patch(
'Reward App',
LookUp(
'Reward App',
'Your ID' = 'Your Gallery'.Selected.'Your ID'
),
{
Points: _existingvalue + Value(DataCardValue7.Text)
}
)
)

@BS10 as mentioned in my previous reply, you do not need Patch in order to do what you're trying to do. The expression you have above can be discarded.

@Amik Thank you. I have discarded the expression and changed this back to SubmitForm(EditForm1) and when I submit the form, the app is not adding the points onto the class. It is creating a new row every time so for example there is 3 rows with the same class name but with different amount of points?

Thanks again for your help with this, I really appreciate it as I am a novice with Power Apps.

@BS10 new rows are being created because it is likely the Form Mode of your Form is set to New.

What I would suggest is that you create a brand new app and try my instructions again - this would eliminate the possibility that whatever customisations you may have made to the Form are interfering with the Submit Form function.

Beyond that, there is very little support I can provide other than to reiterate my previous suggestion - watch some online tutorials on using Forms with Power Apps.

@Amik - I have created a brand new app and this morning and not made any customisations, I have added in the data source. I have amended the update expression of the points data card in the editform, I have used this formula below and I am getting an error within the app and when a reward is submitted the points are not appearing on the sharepoint list.

With(

{

_existingvalue: LookUp(

'Reward App New'

ID = BrowseGallery1.Selected.ID,

'Points'
)

},

_existingvalue + Value(DataCardValue2.Text)

)

I have also checked the form and it the mode is set to edit. I believe this is looking more promising.

Thanks again for your help and advice, I really appreciate it.

@Amik - I had realised I didn't add the comma after 'your data', the error has now disappeared and the points are appearing on the sharepoint list. But they still aren't adding together and new rows are still being created?

Thank you.

@Amik - the points are now being added onto the original reward in the list, it's just creating a new record everytime a reward is added. Nearly there now, I just need to figure out how to stop the app from creating a new row.

Thanks.

@BS10 ,

I have just recreated a three screen app again and I am not experiencing the same issue. If I select an existing record and make an update, the existing record is updated without a new record being created.

However, one thing I do notice is that the overall logic does not make sense.

You want to take a number field in a Form and update the existing value in that field with whatever number value has been entered into the same field. By doing this, every time a user opens a record in the Form and clicks Submit, even if they have not entered a new value in that field, the expression will always add the current value field over itself.

For example, suppose I opened the Form and the existing value in the Points field was 50. If I do not make any changes to the record, but I click save anyway, the expression will add 50 to the existing value of 50, returning 100.

I do not think this would be the result you're looking for.

  1. I suggest making your “Points” field read only by unlocking the Data Card, and then setting the DisplayMode property for the DataCard Value to DisplayMode.View.
  2. Create a new separate field in your data source which users can use to Add points. Insert that field into your Form as a new DataCard. I would then set the Default property of that DataCard to 0
  3. In the Update property of the Points DataCard, use:

Value(DataCardValue_CurrentPoints.Text + Value(DataCardValue_AddPoints.Text))

Visual examples below:

Points App 1.gif

Points App 2.gif

Points App 3.gif

@Amik - that makes much more sense, thank you. I have added in the 'Add Points' as a datacard and set the display mode of the points column to view. Do I need to change the default expression of the points datacard? On the SharePoint list for some reason I am still getting a new row created every time. I have triple checked the edit form mode and this is set to edit not new. Making progress though and I have learnt a lot more, been watching some of the tutorials and they have helped, thanks.

@BS10 - no you do need to change anything in Default property of the Data Card, or the Default property of the Data Card Value.
