Add Points to Column on SharePoint List Via Power App

Hi,

I have created a reward app with x amount of classes, I would like the users to be able to add a reward by typing in the class name and adding the amount of points, then when they submit the reward (submit form) it adds the points they have entered to the current amount for that class. This is the current formula I have below for the OnSelect on the submit form button, could someone advise please? The SharePoint list is called 'Reward App'.

Patch( 'Reward App', LookUp( 'Reward App', 'Class Name' = DataCardValue4.Selected ), { Points: Points + DataCardValue13.Text })

Thanks.

@BS10 looks ok to me although I am not sure what those buttons in the Home screen do. Without directly going to your app, it will be very difficult to identify the cause for new records being created when you edit records.

However you may have better luck in the forums. I suggest raising a new thread but with specific focus on that problem only,

Hi @BS10 ,

Try the below:

With(
    {
        _existingvalue: LookUp(
            'Reward App',
            'Your ID' = 'Your Gallery'.Selected.'Your ID',
            Points
        )
    },
    Patch(
        'Reward App',
        LookUp(
            'Reward App',
            'Your ID' = 'Your Gallery'.Selected.'Your ID'
        ),
        {
            Points: _existingvalue + Value(DataCardValue13.Text)
        }
    )
)

Hi @Amik,

Thank you for your reply, I have tried the code but got the error attached. Do I need to change 'Your ID' or 'Your Gallery' to something else?

Thanks.

@BS10 - it is not clear how you're displaying the current record in your Form. I do not know what DataCardValue4 is (I assume a Combo Box or Dropdown control outside of the form), so the above example uses a Gallery to give you an idea of what direction to take.

How are you getting the record populated into your Form?

@Amik - DataCardValue4 is a text input combo box.

I did try using a drop down box for the class name when adding points in the app but for some reason when I viewed the bar chart to see the classes and how many points they have, the app couldn't display the data in the correct format. For example, it wouldn't pick up the class name along the x axis and wouldn't recognise the points on the y axis? When the class name is set as a text input box when adding points to a class, the bar chart allows the x and y axis to be formatted correctly.

Sorry I hope that makes sense.

@BS10 There is no such thing as a Text Input Combo Box, but assume you just meant it's a Combo Box with Search enabled.

Your profile is not as a "New Member" so I assumed you understood the Patch function. The Patch function requires you to "tell" Power Apps which row/record to update in your Table. Typically this is done by passing a field which uniquely identifies the row you want to "patch".

Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzZ0a3zRFUk&t=1110s

At present, you're using the "Class Name" field to identify the row you want to update.

  1. Are you sure you have a unique class name in your Table?
  2. What is your data source?
  3. What is the expression you have in the Items property of your Combo Box?

@Amik - I will see if there is another option to change my profile.

1. I do have a unique class name in the table.

2. I am using a SharePoint list.

3. This is currently set to 'Default'. Sorry I hope that's correct.

I have just noticed that DataCardValue13 is the combo box on the detail screen to look at the existing amount of points, does this need to be 'Points: _existingvalue + Value(DataCardValue7.Text)' instead? DataCardValue7 is the combo box on the edit screen which will be the new amount of points when being added?

Hi @BS10 ,

I think there is a lot to unpack here because I think you might be misunderstanding some of the fundamentals.

I assume this is a three screen app with a Browse, Detail and Edit screen automatically generated via SharePoint?

Hi @Amik ,

Yes that’s correct. I created the SharePoint list and integrated the app via SharePoint.

Hi @BS10 ,

As a start I suggest you watch some online tutorials on Power Apps, particularly on Forms. Anything from Reza Dorrani and Shane Young are good for Canvas Apps.

Reza: https://www.youtube.com/@RezaDorrani

Shane: https://www.youtube.com/@ShanesCows

From what you have described, you have a three screen app auto-generated from SharePoint. You mentioned a bar chart (which is not included in an auto-generated app) so you have made some customisations to the app. I have no idea what other customisations you may have done, so any advice I give would likely be useless.

Going back to your original question. If I start on the basis that have you have created a brand new auto-generated app without any customisations.

  1. Navigate to EditScreen1
  2. Unlock the Data Card which contains the Points field
  3. Go into the Update property of the Data Card (not the Data Card Value) and replace the existing expression with:

With(

    {

        _existingvalue: LookUp(

            'Your Data',

            ID = BrowseGallery1.Selected.ID,

            'The name of your SharePoint Points field'

        )

    },

    _existingvalue + Value(Your Data Card Value.Text)

)

You do not need to do anything else. The Patch function is not needed for this scenario.
