Disable a People/Group field incase a drop-down selected value = "Submitted"

i have 2 fields:-

1) Drop-down >> named "Document Approval Process Status_DataCard1"

2) People/Group >> named "Approvers"

Now i want to disable the People/Group field in-case the drop-down selection = submitted.. i tried the following formula:-

If (DataCardValue4.Selected.Value="Submitted",DisplayMode.Disabled, DisplayMode.Edit)​

but i got an error:-

unexpected charecters

Try removing the space between If and (

Can you provide a screenshot that shows the whole formula please, make sure it shows any red squiggly lines.

 So a couple things here. 

First, it's much easier to troubleshoot formulas, especially when looking for character errors, if the formulas are well spaced, see below.   Sometimes spaces in strange areas can cause issues.   In the last screenshot it looks like there is an extra space between "Submitted" and the comma.  

See the difference here:

If (DataCardValue4.Selected.Value="Submitted",DisplayMode.Disabled, DisplayMode.Edit)​

If (DataCardValue4.Selected.Value = "Submitted", DisplayMode.Disabled, DisplayMode.Edit)​

Second, if you use the formula bar you get more visible indicators of issues, red lines, blue lines, etc.

I have tried to recreate your issue and so far have not gotten the same error you are seeing.   What is your items formula for the approval status dropdown.

@JR-BejeweledOnei do no think the spaces are causing this error.. i removed all the spaces still get the same error.. also for the formula bar i am adding my formula inside the DisplayMode of the field, so it will not show inside the formula bar!

Is this a canvas app or a modified sharepoint form?

My point wasn't necessarily that the spaces were causing the issue, it just makes it easier to read.

I hope this might help you a bit.    As you can see in the image below, I am editing the DisplayMode property of a field in a form.

I am doing this in the formula bar after selecting the field I want to change.   Please note the numbered items.

1. This is the Selected Datacard in the navigator
2. This is the Selected field on the form
3. This is the DisplayMode property of the selected field next to the formula bar
4. This is where I am typing the formula in the formula bar
5. Here you can see the formula that I am typing in the formula bar, it's the same

One thing to note, the formula bar gives you visual cues as to what is wrong when the formula isn't correct, the displaymode property box on the right does not, even though it shows that there is an issue.   It's the same formula, without the visual cues.

This is why I suggested using the formula bar.
