Editable Grid With Collection Adding Items Randomly

Hello all, quick collection question.  I’m having some odd issues with collections within an application I’m building.  I have a collection established to collect updates to an editable grid setup.  The collection is titled colGridUpdatesRoles and is used as part of roles management within the application.  Each gallery control has the OnChange setting as Select(ButtonX) and ButtonX has the OnSelect setup in the following way:

The save button has a patch function that uses the collection as the source and patches the fields mentioned.

Now for the odd behavior.  I was having problems with the collection having data when opening the application, so I added a clear function to the OnStart.  That worked so that the collection was always empty when opening the application.  The act of opening the screen adds rows to the collection, and adding a clear collection to the OnVisible screen hasn’t resolved the issue. 

As part of the save function, I added a clear function also to close it out, but that doesn’t actually clear the collection.  If I add the same function to a button to manually clear the collection, it does work.  Other than the issues with how things work for collections right now, the practical issue I’m running into is that when the collection is saved, multiple records are being updated on SharePoint (although no actual changes are being made beyond updating the modified by and modified by date).   If I hit a standalone button I created to clear the collection before making changes, only the record I changed is updated.  If I don’t hit that button, most of the time dozens of records are updated. 

I’ve since gone to a toggle button (filter) approach that seems to work, but I’m hoping the community might have some insights into what is happening.  I’ve never heard of a collection populating without a prompt telling it to do so.  In one instance, I did narrow down what appeared to be random updates (1 record changed by 35 updated) to the field having blank entries (every blank was getting updated).  I've since filled in that blank and now less records are getting updated, but the problem still persits.  I wasn't able to narrow down the source to more empty fields, but it could be that.
