How to prevent a status change to 'completed' unless 'Has Attachments' is set to Yes

Hi Everyone

I have a SharePoint form which utilises a status field (dropdown box). Ideally I want to prevent the user from selecting the value of '3-Completed' if HasAttachments is set to No. Currently the workaround I have is a workflow which emails a number of people to say form x has been completed with no attachment; however there must be a neater way of doing this by setting a control on one field which will prevent the user from selecting a value based on the value of another field. So I only want status = '3-Completed' where HasAttachments = On otherwise I want to be provide an error msg when user attempts to save form as '3-Completed' where HasAttachments = Off. 

Is this possible? 

In a prior post I was kindly advised to use the following formula on the status field OnChange function but this just kept erroring with the function countrows has too many arguments

@pcoombe Hello!

I had an similar scenario and I was able to solve it by make the dropdown with the "status" simply not show the option "Finished" if a certain critiera wasnt met.

Based on the issue that you mentioned, do you want to prevent the Dropdown from selecting "3-Completed" if a toggle corresponding to HasAttachments is set to "off"?

I want to confirm two points with you:

1. How you define whether an attachment is uploaded, manually set the Toggle value, or something else?
2. Is there a validation within Toggle to change its value based on if there is an attachment within Attachment control?

I have a test on my side, here is my scenario:

1. Add an EditForm with 2 fields, 'ContractStatus', Attachments and a custom card 'HasAttachments'
2. Toggle.Value changes based on whether an Attachment control has files

I have a test on my side, please take a try as below.

//Set the Default property of the Toggle control as below:

If(IsEmpty(DataCardValue3.Attachments),false,true)

Note: DataCardValue3 represents the Attachment control

//Set the DisplayMode property of the corresponding DataCardValue to 'ContractStatus' as below:

    Toggle2.Value = false && DataCardValue2.Selected.Value = "3-Completed",
    Disabled,
    Edit
)

Note: DataCardValue2 represents the Dropdown corresponding to the 'ContractStatus' field.

//If you want to provide an error message when a user attempts to save the form as '3-Completed' where HasAttachments = Off, you could set the OnSelect property of the Submit Button as below:

thankyou for your response, however if I try to write that formula out on my contract status field, it is telling me that the datacardvalue2 (which is the status dropdown) has an invalid argument type. Would you know how to fix this?

What is your DataCardValue12?

In my scenario, a control corresponding to your DataCardValue12 is a Toggle which is used to identify whether there is an Attachment or not.

Have you read the premise of my solution? I explain all the conditions in my test scenario which is posted in my previous reply.

If your DataCardValue12 is a Toggle, please modify your formula as below

If(
    DataCardValue12.Value = false && DataCardValue2.Selected.Value = "3-Completed",
    Disabled,
    Edit
)

ok so I got your solution to work but it is not quite what I am after. I see that if the toggle is set to false I can still select Completed, only when I do, it greys out the status until I then select the toggle to On, when the status field becomes editable again. this is not quite right, but I do appreciate your solution. What I want is the ability to not select Completed and probably give an error msg if the has attachments toggle is set to no and someone tries to set status to completed.
