How to reference the X and Y position values of an element inside a Gallery?

I have a gallery that loads data in a table format (directly from an excel connection). In one of the columns of the gallery, I'm loading a menu icon. I will like to reference the position X and Y values of that menu icon, so I can trigger an action to show a popup menu to sit exactly on top of the menu icon contained inside the gallery.

I can access the item inside the gallery by referencing gallery_name.Selected.Menu_Icon_name, however I can't seem to reference X or Y in this way.

Is this possible? If not, any alternative? Thank you!

Hi @Jorgear

There is no direct way to achieve this since the gallery is based on the template which is the first item and the X and Y position will always return the template co-ordinates

There is a way in which you could achieve this, but would need lots of work

1- you will need an index for every item in your gallery collection

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Building-PowerApps-Formerly/Patching-an-item-index-number-into-a...

2- You will need to set showscrollbar to false for gallery

3- Set shownavigation to true

3- You will need to set navigation step of gallery to number of items visible to user in screen (they can then use up down navigate buttons to scroll)

4 - Gallery.VisibleIndex will give you the position of the navigation

Example if Navstep is 4

then Visible index will be 1 (showing first 4 items)

then when user hits down arrow to navigate

next 4 items are show and visible index will be 5

and so on

Gallery.VisibleIndex will give you the position of the gallery items and then you would have to run some logic to check the position of the respective item by reading the index and accordingly setting x and y

Not the best option but might work

As an alternative, can you place your your menu (make it a group) inside your Gallery over the top of the menu icon, then

In the Select of the Menu icon put a formula:

UpdateContect({conMenuPopUp: !conMenuPopUp})

Set the visible property of the menu group to:

ThisItem.IsSelected && conMenuPopUp

This way the menu will always appear exactly over the menu icon clicked in the gallery.

Thank for your reply! I'm going to give this a try and see where we land!

Thank you @PaulD1 this works well with just one menu button - the first one. But not with the succesive rows - unless I'm missing something? What do you mean exactly by placing the menu inside the Gallery? (I already have the menu grouped) and In a layer above the Gallery (but not inside)

Hi @Jorgear

The menu group needs to go 'inside' the Gallery, like the menu icon. The group will be repeated for each row, but will only be visible on the currently selected row when the menu icon is clicked (you'll need some mechanism to dismiss the menu as well).

@PaulD1 I have a gallery with popup menu similar to what you suggested here, but I set Y position to the gallery template size such that the popup menu appears directly below the selected gallery item (to avoid covering up any relevant data). Power Apps won't let you drag an entity within a gallery beyond the template border, but it does allow functions to do so. Nothing wrong with negative X/Y position or positions that would place objects beyond the boundary of the gallery item, so long as the coordinate is specified by a function, like PopUp.X = -100 or PopUp.Y = Gallery.TemplateSize. Any reasonable function will do.

This works great! Until you get to the bottom of the gallery... When viewing the popup for the last couple items in the scrollable gallery, the popup appears beyond the scrollable range.

How can I get my popup to stay within scrollable range without covering up the selected gallery item? I wouldn't mind dynamically setting the popup position above or below the gallery item depending on absolute position on the screen for the selected gallery item, but can't figure out how to reference absolute position of selected gallery item without a big hassle to add an index column and all the relevant logic to make that work...

So I either need a way to scroll past the end of the gallery or a way to dynamically reference the current position of the selected gallery item such that the popup appears above or below that gallery item dependent on whether it's below or above the halfway point of the vertical screen dimension, respectively.

Is this possible?

Edit: I suppose we don't really need absolute position on the screen as long as we can get the index of the selected gallery item, because you can infer the absolute screen position by multiplying gallery index by Gallery.TemplateSize (disregarding scroll position). We can ignore scroll position because user can simply scroll down the page to bring popup into view for most of the gallery items. It's merely the last couple of items (depending on size of popup relative to Gallery.TemplateSize) that cause popup to run off the page. So essentially I need to dynamically change PopUp.Y based on Gallery.Selected.Index but there seems to be no such Index property.

Edit2: Something like this might be the ticket for my use case...
