Linking 2 columns

I was wondering if it's possible to

I've got an app where you can add items to a sharepoint list, nothing spectacular.

When adding a new item to the list there are a few fields you have to fill in, 2 of those items are choice columns

The easiest way to describe it that it's a Category column and a Subcategory column. When you choose a Category the choices in the Subcategory should be a short list based on the chosen Category. I know it's not possible to link both columns in Sharepoint.

But is it possible in Powerapps to somehow link the choices in the subcategory to the Category column when filling in a new row ?

Category                                                                                             Subcategory

AA1
AA2
BB1
BB2

so when I add a new item to my list and choose Category A the only items shown in Subcategory should be A1 and A2.

I've got it to work in a gallery because then I could use distinct based on items in a list but now I create a new row so it doesn't work

@WarrenBelz I've got my collection running but what do you mean FirstComboName and SecondComboName ?

Both datacards (MainProject and SubProject) are cards and not Comboboxes

Second CB Items

Sort(
   Filter(
      colMainProject,
      MainProject = FirstComboName.Selected.Result
   ).SubProject,
   SubProject
)

I can't get this part to work because it goes wrong with the FirstComboName.Selected.Result that has a redline underneath.

I'm not sure what the correct names are for the FirstComboName and SecondComboName

Update of the second Data Card

SecondComboName.Selected.SubProject

Should that be DataCardValue2.Selected.SubProject ?  if so there is a red line underneath the .SubProject

Hi @RvdHeijden ,

When you posted When you choose a Category the choices in the Subcategory should be a short list based on the chosen Category, I assumed this was from a drop-down or combo box. How are you choosing them ?

@WarrenBelz in my SP list both columns are choice columns. In my app it’s a form based on datacards obviously.

Hi @RvdHeijden ,

I must be missing something here - can you please explain your process flow in a few sentences.

@WarrenBelz in my SP list I have 2 columns Hoofdproject (=MainProject) and AP gebied (=SubProject) both are choicecolumns in the SP List.

In my app I use a form in which you can update an excisting row and another form where you can add new rows to the list.

Both lists are linked to that SP list called 'FttH Schouwfouten rapportage' and in my form they are called Hoofdproject_DataCard1 and AP gebied_Datacard 1

The Items property for the first was Choices ([@'FttH Schouwfouten rapportage']. 'Hoofdproject') and the last one Choices ([@'FttH Schouwfouten rapportage']. 'AP gebied').

My question was if I can change the items property of the datacards based on a collection so that If I choose a Hoofdproject (=Mainproject) the items in the other datacard for the AP gebied (=SubProject) are based on the collection

@RvdHeijden ,

We must have a communication incompatibility here (maybe on my side) - I need to ask again how are you choosing the values ? You refer to values of

Choices ([@'FttH Schouwfouten rapportage']. 'Hoofdproject')

and

Choices ([@'FttH Schouwfouten rapportage']. 'AP gebied')

as the Items property of what  - I was assuming drop-down/combo boxes. (you refer to Data Cards Hoofdproject_DataCard1 and 'AP gebied_Datacard 1')

I noted going back your Collection and provided you with the Items of a combo Box/drop down that would seem to do what you want (it is a simple cascading filter). So how and what with are you choosing the values ?

@WarrenBelz I've managed to get the dropdown in my Form working for the Hoofdproject (=MainProject) however my dropdown (in my form) for the AP gebied (=SubProject) doesn't display anything.

Update of the second Data Card

SecondComboName.Selected.SubProject

SecondComboName = DataCardValue2.Selected.AP gebied ??

@RvdHeijden ,

That is because you are referencing the Data Card HoodProject_datacard1, not the Combo Box  DataCardValue1

@WarrenBelz I think the problem is solved, I've changed that formula and saw that there were a few typo's that resulted in the error.

I changed some values from AP gebied to 'AP gebied' and that fixed the issue, I've tested it and now it works

@WarrenBelz sorry to bother you again but I thought the problem was solved and as far as the powerapp is concerned it is.

But .... the data isn't being send back to my SP list.

In Powerapps the values used are coming out of a collection but when I use the patch function the values are not being pushed back to SP.

Patch(
  'FttH Schouwfouten rapportage';
    LookUp('FttH Schouwfouten rapportage';'Id (ID)'=Gallery1.Selected.'Id (ID)');
        Form1.Updates);;
Notify("Wijzigingen zijn succesvol verwerkt";Success);;
ViewForm(Form1)

Any ideas on how to fix that issue ?
