Model-Driven App setVisible of a field in javascript

Hi Com,

I have a model-driven app and want to set some certain fields of the form to invisible if a condition is true.

Right now my code checks which user is using the app and compare the fullname of the user with a value of a field.

Everything works except the setVisible line...

My code:

function hideFields(executionContext){
    var formContext = executionContext.getFormContext();
    var varUser = formContext.getAttribute("cr7dc_besitzer3").getValue();
    var varCurrentUser = Xrm.Utility.getGlobalContext().userSettings.userName;
    var field2 = formContext.getControl("cr7dc_status3");
    if (varUser!== null) {
        var varUserId= varUser[0].id;
        Xrm.WebApi.retrieveRecord("systemuser", varUserId, "?$select=fullname").then(
            function success(result) {
                console.log(result);
                var prüfer2 = result["fullname"];
                if(!(varCurrentUser === prüfer2)){
                    field2.setVisible(false);
                    window.alert("false");
                } else {
                    field2.setVisible(true);
                    window.alert("true");
                };
            },
            function(error) {
                console.log(error.message);
            }
        );
    }
}

My app outputs the window.alert(true/false) command, so I guess the if-condition works. However, the setVisible lines don't work. The visibility of the field is always the same, regardless of whether it is true or false. There is also no error/exception.

Do someone know why?

Thanks

Regards

Hi @furgun -

Assuming "cr7dc_besitzer3" is a Dataverse Lookup column and you want to register this event handler on Form Load, try the below (check the "Pass execution context as first parameter" checkbox):

function hideFields(executionContext) {

try { //ignore script if this is a new item
	// Get Form Context
	var formContext = executionContext.getFormContext();
	// Get Lookup id value
	var LookupId = formContext.getAttribute("cr7dc_besitzer3").getValue();
	// Get Lookup name
	var Name = LookupId[0].name;
	// Get current user name
	var userName = Xrm.Utility.getGlobalContext().userSettings.userName;
	if (Name == userName) {
		formContext.getControl("cr7dc_status3").setVisible(true);
	} else {
		formContext.getControl("cr7dc_status3").setVisible(false);
	}

    } catch (ex) {
        console.log("getLookupValue: Error -> " + ex.message);

    }
};

Hi

I'm not into 'coding/scripting' but, in my experience using the no-code approach, the 'set visibility' action in the business rule reacts better if the desired field on the form is set to hidden by default to begin with and my business rule then dictates when it should be made visible.

I hope this information helps. If it does, please do give it a thumbs up. If it helps resolve your issue then please accept it as a solution.

Kind regards

Gulshan

Hi, first thank you.

I would like to avoid coding, but some function are not possible with business rules unfortunately. As far as I know, there is no possibility to refer to the "current user" of the app in a business rule.

Let me try to explain you my intention:

there is a field which contains users. And this field should only be visible for this user. Which means: if the current user equals to the value of field, then it is visible, otherwise it is invisible. But I cannot find a way to refer to the current user in a business rules. I can only use fields comparisons.

Hi

Coming from a no-code background, I understand from your post that your conditions seem to be working but no action happening.

What I suggest is that you set the column to be hidden ('Hide' - checked) on the form and then try your logic to display the column if condition is met.

Hi,

i doesn't work.. neither hide checked nor hide unchecked works..

Hi,

I don't know why but this works for cr7dc_status3 (which is an option field) but it doesn't work for cr7dc_besitzer3 which is a lookup field with user data. If I add the line formContext.getControl("cr7dc_besitzer3").setVisible(false) nothing happens to cr7dc_besitzer3 ..

do you know why?

thanks!

@furgun so you're saying my suggested code does work and does do what you wanted it to do (hide the "cr7dc_status3" field), but now you want it to do something else?

Hi,

yes it does work and it hides "cr7dc_status3" correctly, but i doesn't work for example for the field "cr7dc_besitzer3". I do not understand why because I do the same as you. The only difference between these 2 field is, that status3 is an option field and besitzer3 is a lookup field with users in it.

Hi @furgun ,

You wanted to hide the status field based on a condition, a solution was offered, and you confirmed it worked. But instead of accepting the solution as the answer, you’re now asking a different question.

The courteous thing to do in future is to mark the original question as answered first, and then ask your question or (ideally) raise your question as a separate post so that other community users can chime in with their knowledge.

Back to the new question, so long as you’re using setVisible via getControl (which we are), then there is no difference on whether the control is an OptionSet column or a Lookup column.

It will be difficult to troubleshoot the cause without going into your app. I would assume you have:

  • Published all customisations.
  • You are running this script On Load
  • You are accessing existing records in your Form rather than raising a new Form
  • You have checked pass execution context as first parameter
