Set variable thisitem x is not updating correctly around half the time

I have an application where the first action is:

set(JobID, Text(ThisItem.JobID))

I've noticed that around 20% the time a user clicks that, the OnSelect action runs to completion including all the middle/end steps, but for some reason the jobid is NOT updated to the new ThisItem.JobID

As a test, I've created the ThisItem.JobID in the gallery as a text field. It 100% of the time displays correctly, but despite that, if I select it, the jobid variable retains the last used variable. If I click it again, it updates to the new correct variable.

I've tested this further by trying to Set(JobID, "") and then immediately Set(JobID, Text(ThisItem.JobID)) and no luck.

I added an If(JobID <> ThisItem.JobID, Set(JobID, Text(ThisItem.JobID)) and it's still retaining the previous JobID a significant portion of the time.

What is the context for the OnSelect where you are calling this code? ThisItem doesn't really mean anything outside of a Gallery.

I've included 2 images - the highlighted numbers are supposed to be the same, they are not. You can see the other numbers match, but not the ID's. They are the JobID and ThisItem.JobID

The code needs to be in a behavior property of a control inside the gallery in the Gallery template.  This looks like it runs at the level of the gallery, not the gallery template.  What property and control is the code actually for?  Its not clear from the screenshot.

I'll be honest, I do not understand your reference to gallery vs gallery template.
Inside the Gallery item, I have a few labels and a button. The code is inside the button "OnSelect" action. 

The code does work if you click it a 2nd time, but not always on the first.

The random floating number you see in the gallery (left side) is the ThisItem.JobID which once you click the arrow, the OnSelect Set(jobid, Text(ThisItem.JobID)) - the red text boxes on the right (bottom) show the JobID - you can see they do not match despite the entire OnSelect function completing on the screen (load spinner, otehr fields hide/unhide, data is updated, etc.). The problem is it's using the OLD ThisItem.JobID, not the new one and is therefore loading bad  information. That same ID is used to look up all the critical information for the app.

Inside the Gallery Item is what I mean by the Template. Changes you make in that first item (the template) are repeated in every item in the gallery.  That's what I mean by template.

One last clarification that I suspect you also know. Set(jobid sets a global variable that is the same in every item in the Gallery.  Is the red box you mentioned inside or outside the gallery?  If you are expecting to be able to set a different value for each item in the Gallery that won't work because there is only one jobid variable.

jobid is outside of the gallery.

The left side of the app is a gallery pick list - selecting the object should gather/load data to teh right side of the screen. jobid is a global variable used within the OnSelect action and then loaded to the right side of the screen.

If its outside the Gallery then there is no real reason to use ThisItem or the variable.  Just use GalleryName.Selected.JobID  where you are using the variable now.  ThisItem is so you can have a formula defined once and evaluated differently for each item in the gallery.  Its not really a reliable thing to use outside the confines of the Gallery.

I am using the ThisItem.x inside the gallery item to do other SQL lookups. the thisitem.x references (setting variable name, etc) is only used to populate other fields not contained within the gallery.

if that JobID is not correct inside the gallery, all the SQL lookups will be wrong.

I am actually curious now if I can influence the test results by using the thisitem instead of the global variable within the code. I use the variable as a faster way to reference things since it is used a fair number of times.
