Variable briefly holds value then sets itself to blank...but only on first "On Select"

Hello All, I'm having an issue with a variable resetting itself to blank on the first "On Select" click to set it and I cannot understand why.  

On the attached gif, I have a collection which contains a Proposal ID (sharepoint ID column) and a Capability Cluster (a single line text stored in the same sharepoint list as ID).   All of the blue buttons at the bottom are just for troubleshooting purposes to show the values of the variables as I click on icons.

When I click the "+" icon under "Proposal Overview", there are two commands run to store these values in varProposalID and varCapabilityCluster respectively.  The blue buttons at the bottom show the behavior.  When I click on the "+" the first time, the varProposalID is displayed on the button to the left as expected and remains.  However, the button to the right for Capability Cluster briefly flashes the value for Capability Cluster and then gets set to blank.  If I click the "+" on the same record again, it sets Capability Cluster and it stays.  If I click "+" on a different record, it does the same set/unset the first time and then works the second time.  It's very repeatable.

The only difference in these two fields when a record is being created in the list is that the Capability Cluster value comes from a separate lookup table.  However, I wouldn't think that comes into play here since the collection only contains the values from the main list.

Any help or hints would be appreciated!

The code in the plus button is:

The values being displayed that flash are the actual values expected ("03 Create R&D" for example).  The first time I click the "+", they flash and then quickly disappear.  The second time I click on the "+" for the same record, they stay.  If I click on the "+" for the next record, it's the same behaviour...the first time it flashes/disappears then the second time it stays.  Meanwhile, the variable that holds the ID has no issues.

There are in the top looks like a Gallery. What is the Items property for this. If it's a collection, where are you collecting it? Is these anything else that could change its values?

The Items property for the gallery is a collection called colProposals.  

colProposals is set when the app launches by:

Set(varUser, Office365Users.MyProfileV2().displayName);
Set(varEmail, Lower(Office365Users.MyProfileV2().userPrincipalName));
Collect(colProposals, Sort(Filter(DevDPGProposal, Lower(ProposalOwner.Email) = varEmail), ID));

The DevDPGProposal list is the list that contains both the ID and the CapabilityCluster.  The only thing "different" about CapabilityCluster is when creating or editing a record in DevDPGProposal, it refers to a different list to look up the possible values.  However, that doesn't have anything to do with the screen I'm on in the gif.  When I look at the data stored in the list, it has the correct values stored....so, it's baffling to me.

@MThomas When you click the + rather than storing the values in individual variables, try this,

Set(gblCurrentItem, ThisItem)

and set the Text of the CapabilityCluster button to gblCurrentItem.CapabilityCluster and see what happens.

Cool!  That seems to at least keep the variable value set!  Now I just need to go update all my view/edit screens to refer to the new gblCurrentItem.<fieldname>
