creating a data entry popup within my powerapps team form

I have an app I am working through as an exercise in learning Powerapps.  It is basically a shipping tracking app that is about 90% complete now.  The user enters the information necessary when they are shipping out a product.  Most of the fields , like customer name, are drop downs.  I want the user to be able to add a new customer if the customer doesn't exist in the dataverse.

So, I envision it as they click on the + sign for add, next to the customer name (As an example), and simple data entry popup comes up on the screen where they can enter in a new customer name and submit.  that entry is stored in the customer table and appears in the drop down list.  I would then rinse and repeat the process for the other drop down boxes as necessary.

Hi @Terry-B

To achieve a popup effect, follow the steps below:

  1. Add the following bit to the OnSelect property of your + icon: UpdateContext({lclShowPopup: true});
  2. Add a container. This container will then include all elements that you're about to add (e.g. Textfield, button, etc.).
    Properties of the container element:
    1. <container>.Visible = lclShowPopup
    2. <container>..Color = RGBA(0,0,0,0.85)
  3. Once you've done that, just add the elements that you need, including a text field (to type in the customer name) and a button (to submit it). You can even add a rectangular shape and set the fill property to a white/grey color to make it look like the following picture:popup.png
  4. For the OnSelect property of the button, you can add something like the following to create a new record:

Patch(
    <customer list name>,
    Defaults(<customer list name>),
    {
        // customer field, e.g.
        'Customer Name': txtCustomer.Text
    }
);

// to hide the popup
UpdateContext({lclShowPopup: false});

...and that's it! As for the customer dropdown, if you don't read the customer list from a collection (which I would not advise you to do anyway), it should automatically be updated.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you struggle with the popup.

Kind regards,

Fabian

hi @Terry-B , welcome to the forum.

I assume the item for the datacard is the customer table. With this in place you can do the following:

pop the form to add a new customer or a new screen. im going to use a pop up here.

  • Add a container (set its colour to white, RGBA(255, 255, 255, 0.9)
    • Add a textinput
    • button
    • label for header
    • rectangle for a nice border

The Add icon (+) on the form, set it to a variable to show the popup form in the container Set(_PopVisible,true)

rubin_boer_0-1615411408871.png

Set the visible of the container you created to that variable

rubin_boer_1-1615411441886.png

At this point you have a few customers that is displayed

rubin_boer_3-1615411594823.png

The user needs to see Customer 10 when clicking on th +,

Now when you click on the + the container will be visible and the controls on you form will look faded.

rubin_boer_2-1615411535471.png

The add customer button OnSelect = Patch(Customer,Defaults(Customer),{Title: txtCustomer.Text});Set(_PopVisible,false).

With the popup visible add customer 10 and update your table

rubin_boer_4-1615411715889.png

You will now see th eform again and Customer 10 will be available

@FabianAckeret  thank you for your help.  It got me about 90% there.

Ah, the onlselect in the submit button.  I have this :

Patch('cust-Tables',Defaults('cust-Tables'),{'Cust-Name' : TextBox2});UpdateContext({lclShowPopup: false});

cust-Tables is my dataverse table, with the field cust-Name.  It doesn't show an error in the formula box, but when I run the code, it doesn't do anything.  the entry I type just doesn't appear in the table.  after previewing, when I exit out, it then shows an error.  I am not sure if the"Textbox2" reference is correct.  should that be the name of the text input box?

Thanks to the both of you @rubin_boer  @FabianAckeret .  I got it working with this code segment for the submit button :

Patch('cust-Tables',Defaults('cust-Tables'),{'Cust-Name': TextBox2.Value});UpdateContext({lclShowPopup: false});

Just a bit of cleanup now to do.  A cancel for example (If they click on it accidentally), also, the popup box always remembers the last entry.  I want to change that as well so it just always says "enter new customer name".  something like that.
