Hello everyone,
I have a canvas application and I want to have the hierarchical list of managers of each user who connects to the application in onstart.
how can I do this?
almost said it wasn't possible due to the dynamic nature of one employee may have 2, while other may have 6. But then thought about it for a minute and decided you can do it . Here's how I do it as of right now.
Place the following anywhere an action can be triggered, button page visible etc (Start on a button for testing)
Set(currentID, Office365Users.MyProfileV2().id);
Clear(mgrList);
Reset(mgrTimer);
Set(mgrTimerStart, false);
Set(mgrTimerStart, true)
now lets make a timer named mgrTimer
give it these settings
It's start value will be
mgrTimerStart
and it's OnTimerEnd will be
IfError(
Collect(mgrList,
AddColumns(Office365Users.ManagerV2(currentID), "mgrLevel", CountRows(mgrList)+1)),
Reset(mgrTimer); Set(mgrTimerStart, false); RemoveIf(mgrList, IsBlank(displayName)); Notify("Completed", NotificationType.Information),
Set(currentID, Office365Users.ManagerV2(currentID).id);
Reset(mgrTimer); Set(mgrTimerStart, false); Set(mgrTimerStart, true)
)
This will go until the formula can no longer be satisfied, and then remove any empty returns while ALSO adding a mgr level column that will assign 1 to their first level manager, 2 for that mgrs manager, and so on until the formula is done.
Most responses I could find here were saying impossible or do in flow etc so not sure if there is a better way than this @timl do you know any tricks that would work simpler than the one I just shared?
Hi @TheRobRush,
This sort of thing is difficult so I'd say that your timer solution is very clever. I can't think of a better way.
I hoped that the recent experimental release of UDFs would include the recursion capabilities but unfortunately it doesn't. When they eventually release that, it would be perfect for that.

Yes, recursive inclusion would really be fantastic.
@TheRobRush thank you for your reply.
It works and give the list of manager using button.
How can get this list in OnStart of the apps ?
sould work just by placing this in your OnStart and leaving timer the same
Set(currentID, Office365Users.MyProfileV2().id);
Clear(mgrList);
Reset(mgrTimer);
Set(mgrTimerStart, false);
Set(mgrTimerStart, true)
If for some reason it does not, just place that in OnVisible of first screen instead
you will need to be in PLAY mode to test it as timers only run when playing not in the eidtor mode. So likely wont see it running when you simulate the onstart, better to publish then run the app live and see if it worked
Agree with all of the above, however, you could consider implementing that logics using Power Automate flow. You can use a Do until loop to get the manager as long as there is one and return a table or a concatenated string.
Another way to do it without the timer is, considering you know the depth of the hierarchy, use a ForAll loop on App Start for example:
ClearCollect(colHierarchy, {id: 1, email: User().Email});
ForAll(Sequence(10, 2),
With({managerMail: IfError(Office365Users.Manager(Last(colHierarchy).email).Mail, Last(colHierarchy).email)},
If(managerMail <> Last(colHierarchy).email,
Collect(colHierarchy, {id: Value, email: managerMail}))));
That's not the best way since it will try to fetch the manager 10 times even if the hierarchy depth is lower, plus if the org hierarchy is higher, you'll need to update the sequence call. That said, it was tested and ran successfully for a 7th level employee.
Hope this helps in any way
here's another way with no timer that you can set in your onstart.
Simply set the sequence Value to cap for your org.
I have it set at 50, and it takes MAYBE 1 second so should be fine. And returns only people, no errors or blanks etc
ClearCollect(currentLevelID, {idNumber: Office365Users.MyProfileV2().id, Name: Office365Users.MyProfileV2().displayName, Level: 0});
ForAll(Sequence(50) As stepsToTake,
IfError(Office365Users.ManagerV2(Last(currentLevelID).idNumber),false,
With({userSelected: Office365Users.ManagerV2(Last(currentLevelID).idNumber)},
If(!IsBlank(userSelected.displayName),
Collect(currentLevelID, {idNumber: userSelected.id, Name: userSelected.displayName, Level: stepsToTake.Value})))));
Thank you, it works now on OnStart.
how to remove the current user's line from the list and only show their managers?
