Display value from specifc column from a lookup table

Hello,

I have a form with a lookup field on it. Previous developer designed the backend loopup table with numberic ID as the primary column, and then other text columns that contain human readable meaningful data. E.g.

Name (Primary column)	Hapu
32	Nga Maihi
33	Ngai Tuariki
37	Te Tawera

So, on my form, after I selected a record from the lookup table, the field displays numeric ID instead of the Hapu name.

If there's a way to configure the lookup field to display a specific column value from the lookup table instead of the value from the primary column?

Yes, but it's quite a complex workaround.

I have to use JavaScript to create a new <input> element and hide the OOTB <input> element.

Then attach an onchange event handler to the OOTB <input> element so that when its value (the numbe) is changed, fetch the lookup record by its ID to get the text value and put it into my <input> element.

If you are experienced in CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, and fetchXML, then you may go down this road.

I am on the same situation, though I wonder if there's a way to do this using Metadata?
I can try the JS method you mentioned, however it does sound like an annoying workaround to do every time for every single form.

@RCSI_SIA_BAH if after selection of an item (i.e. lookup field is populated) you can use a Quick View form to display (readonly) fields that are on the lookup record.  The Lookup field itself will always display the Primary Name column this is by design and the same behavior for lookups in Dataverse (Model Driven apps etc)

@Fubar I just played around with the lookup view and realized, the value on display changes depending on what you keep as the first column on the view set for the lookup.
That works for all except any value from a related table on the view, so for example if I set a Name column to be first in the view and the ID column second, when I select a value, the Name gets displayed on the lookup field instead of the ID.
But when I had a related column set as the first one and then any other attribute, the displayed value was back to the ID.
