Issue with flow creating and updating records in Dynamics 365 from excel file

Hey guys

I'm having some issues with a flow I've built. The flow requirement was to create or update a record in Dynamics 365 from an excel file on a weekly basis. Creating a new record when the staff payroll number of the list of dynamics 365 records didn't match any row on the payroll number column in the excel file.

The issue I'm receiving when I run the flow is on the condition and it states : ActionFailed. An action failed. No dependent actions succeeded.

Has anybody worked on a similar requirement that could help me out? Or potentially could assist me with this? Thanks in advance 🙂

Hi @jackmurphy015,

Please expand the Dynamic 365 Update record action, there should be detailed error messages logged within this action.

Besides, would you please also share the Flow configuration here?
I saw you used the Excel Get row action, this action would require a File Name, Table Name and the corresponding Row ID, so I don't think it would be helpful in your situation.

There is a workaround to deal with two tables (two arrays), in Microsoft Flow, but it is a little complicated.

Logic here is the following:

First we get the data list, for your situation, here should be the related Dynamics 365 entity, and the Excel table.

Then we need to create a variable, set the variable to Array, set the variable value to Dynamics 365,  when comparing to the actual value, we use the first() function to get the first record from the Array, and then compare it with records from the Excel table.

after compared, remove the first record within the array, then do the compare until the variable is empty.

Thank you for this. I've had a read through of the post you included a couple of times and it helped me create a condition to identify whether there is a match from the list of payroll numbers in excel against the list of payroll numbers in dynamics 365.

I was wondering if you know how to iterate over a list of arrays in a flow so that I can update records in Dynamics 365 and still pass the values from my excel table into the update action? To update each record in Dynamics 365, I need to specify the GUID of each record. I've pulled the list of guids into an array and can only pass either the first() or last() functions into the update record id value, is there anyway within flow to iterate over a list of guids from an array and update a correlating record within a foreach?

I am going to raise a vote idea so that we can update records based on alternate keys like most web api integrations allow us to now do. As that would easily allow us to specify the alternate ID from the excel file instead of pulling an array into Dynamics 365.

Appreciate the help you've already provided, if this is something you could help with it would be much appreciated.
