Enable Final User to import an excel

Hi all,

I have a model-driven app with 8 different tables. One of the tables is a list of countries.

on my model-driven app I have a form to add countries to a project. Since a single project can have up to 160 countries I would like to provide the functionality for the final user to import an excel / csv with the list of countries.

I searched everywhere but I just found the possibility for the admin to import data from excel, there is nothing talking about the final user doing it.

any idea how I can implement it?

Thanks a million @MarioRing and @dpoggemann !!

I tried another concept this morning. I created a FILE field on my table and assigned a Power Automate to it. The user is able to upload an excel and the power automate does the job.

Thanks again!

Hi @tiagozwick ,

Your model driven application should have the ability to "Import from Excel" where you can import the data to your table that has the countries.  I normally do the "Export to Excel" first and then add the entries required, and re-import using the "Import From Excel".

Is this what you are asking or something else?

Hope this helps. Please accept if answers your question or Like if helps in any way.

Hi Drew,

First of all thanks for taking the time answering my question.

Indeed as Admin / Developer I can import data from Excel. The question is, how can I enable the simple user to do it as well?

This is the form workflow:

  1. User logs on Powerapps
  2. On the left panel the user clicks on <Project Management>
  3. On the central panel the a view of Projects is shown
  4. User clicks on "New Project"
  5. On the Projects form there is a tab named <Countries in Scope>
  6. The User click on that table and has the option to create new <Country Entities>, Once <Country Entity> by each country in scope. I created a table named <Country> and a relationship many-to-one to <Project> for this purpose
  7. Here is my dificulty --> How do I enable the simple user to upload an excel with all countries in scope so they do not need to click on "Create New Country" 80 or 150 times.
PS: Those are big project 🙂

I hope you have an idea. Thanks in advance!

  • Use N:N relationship instead
    • Create a NEW entity "Country" with relationship N:N with the Project.
    • Create a bunch of Country records, one per each available country.
    • Then put the proper subgrid on your Project form.
    • The users will be able to click "Add existing Country" button, and then see all available Countries in the list, then select multiple of them

Hi @tiagozwick ,

I like @MarioRing 's approach if this works for your data / relationship.  It would make it easy to assign the countries.  If you have additional metadata on the Project Countries table then you would need to go down a different approach.

If you can't use the N:N, you could expose the Project Countries table in your navigation and the user could do the Export to Excel / Import from Excel on that view and populate all their countries in the Excel file along with the Project name to add them to the project.

Hope this helps. Please accept if answers your question or Like if helps in any way.
Thanks,
Drew

I donot see this Import from Excel option in for custom roles. Can you please help with permissions needed for this?

Hi @dpoggemann I believe that is what @tiagozwick was asking and I have the same issue. As admin, I see the import, but the roles that were created for my end users apparently don't have the permissions and they don't have the Import from Excel icon. So I'm guessing the way these roles were setup was wrong from the get go but the question is how that enabled for their roles?
