Search Lookup Column

I have create data table and would like to allow the user to search the table.  One of my entity fields is a lookup field of the User entity.  When I attempt to user the search function, it does not allow me to select the 'Full Name' of the user.  Instead it gives the column name that starts with "c785_".  What can I do to pull the correct column ('Full Name')?

Hi @duncant ,

Do you want to use lookup field in Search function?

I'm afraid it's not supported lookup field in Search function currently.

Search function only supports text type field.

You could refer this in doc of Search function:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/functions/function-filter-lookup

Also, in search function, you need to use formula like this:
Search(entity, string, Name)        //you need to use Name of field, not display name, just like "cr73e_" in your example.

I suggest you use Filter to search for lookup field, which could have the same feather of Search function.

You just need to use formula like this:

Filter(entity,Textinput1.Text in lookup_fieldname.fieldname_in_relatedentity)

In filter function, you just need to use DisplayName of field, not Name of filter.

For example:

Filter(testmanies,TextInput1.Text in testone.Name)

//testone is my lookup field's diaplayname, name is the lookup field display name in related entity.

Can you please provide some screenshots. I am not totally sure with what you mean by:

Hi @duncant ,

Do you want to know why you need to use "c785_..." as fieldname in search function?

Regarding the problem you mentioned, I guess that the difficulty you encountered may be the confusion between Display name and Name:

Firstly, let me explain the meaning of Display name and Name.

When you open a field’s setting, you could see its Display name and Name.

The “1” I marked is display name, “2” is Name.

In my test, Name is “crec3_FullName”.

"c785_” in your case is a automatically generated prefix, just like “crec3_" in my test.

This prefix is intended to give your objects a unique name if you wish to import them into another environment in the future (which would have a different prefix).

Secondly, let me explain the usage of Display Name and Name in app.

The “Display name” is used when presenting this field to your users.

The “Name” is used  when building your app, in expressions and formulas.

In your issue, since you are using this field to build a formula, so you need to use “Name” in your formula.

Thirdly, please note :

Display name”  can be updated at anytime to display differently in your apps,  “Name” cannot be changed after your entity has been saved as this could result in breaking an existing app.

By the way, please read the meaning of “Name” field:

1\The name of your Field is the unique name across your environment. A name will be generated for you based on the display name that you've entered. Once a field is created the name cannot be changed as it may be referenced in your applications or code.

2\The name has a prefix which has been automatically generated by the system. This prefix is intended to give your objects a unique name if you wish to import them into another environment in the future (which would have a different prefix).

When I attempt to filter my data table to allow the user to search through the data table I am given the "cr73e_" prefixed column.  I will need the column to user the StudentID.'Full Name', to be searched.
