Unexpected Error when trying to load data from Excel

I am trying to load an Excel spreadsheet into CDS. I get "Unexpected Error" when I try to enter the OneDrive shared link into the box. The link is https://constructionspecialtiesfl-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/p/donjr/EVnhiWUx_bVNgYz9Wp2DmEMBk1Qg4-VEwY91...

When I try it in Edge, I get" Browsing for this user is not supported. Please delete your connection and sign in as a different user." When I search for that message on the internet, I get nothing - no results. I'm signed in so I don't even know what it means.

Hi @DonV ,

Could you please share more details about the error message on your side?

Based on the issue that you mentioned, I have made a test on my side, and don't have the issue that you mentioned. According to the OneDrive shared link that you provided, I found that the data within the Excel file has not be formatted as a Table:

Please consider format the data in your Excel file (OneDrive shared link) as a Table, then re-import data into your CDS Entity, then check if the issue is solved.

Note: When importing data from a Excel file into a CDS Entity, please make sure the data in this Excel file has been formatted as a Table alreadly.

More details about formatting Excel data as a Table, please check the following article:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/canvas-apps/how-to-excel-tips

More details about importing data from Excel into CDS Entity, please refer to the following article:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/common-data-service/data-platform-import-export

In addition, you could also consider take a try with the "Edit data in Excel" functionality in CDS Entity and the "Dataflow" functionality in PowerApps to import data from a Excel file into your CDS Entity, then check if the issue is fixed.

"Edit data in Excel" function in CDS Entity

Dataflow" functionality in PowerApps

Thank you. Now I'm getting a different error that's a little more helpful, even if it still doesn't make sense.

I am signed into my environment and when I try that link ,I get "Browsing for this user is not supported. Please delete your connection and sign in as a different user. (Session ID: f6ac2312-bb99-4aba-a9f3-8957bb15e588)"

Hi @DonV ,

Do you use "Power Query" functionality in CDS to load data into a CDS Entity?

When you use the "Browse" functionality to pick up Excel file within the Power Query panel to load data into your CDS Entity, it would browse and select files from your OneDrive for Business storage rather than your personal OneDrive storage.

So please make sure you have signed in OneDrive for Business with your Work or School account already rather than your Personal account in your browser.

Also please consider clear cache of your browser, then sign in OneDrive for Business with your Work or School accont, then sign in your PowerApps again, try to load data from Excel into CDS Entity using "Power Query" functionality in CDS, check if the issue is solved.

In addition, I think the above two alternative solutions could also achieve your needs. Please consider take a try with it.

Sorry, I don't consider the dataflow/Power Query "alternate solution" an acceptable answer. You provided acceptable links on how to use it but I don't want to deal with that much complexity when the Excel->CDS Entity tool is right there. I'd prefer that tool to work as expected.

I've attached screenshots of my environment and the user it's tied to. That is the work account.

I cleared cache; I even used an InPrivate window in Edge to try to make sure it was clean. All that said, it appears that I'm using the right user, therefore the error doesn't make sense.

I'm a little confused how you "made a test on your side" as you said in the first post if that wasn't formatted as a table. That means it shouldn't have worked for you as well.

If you're still having this problem (or for anybody else having it) -> what worked for me was to go to the Connections blade in https://make.powerapps.com.  I just went nuclear and blew everything away.  You might need to be a bit more refined in your approach.  Once I cleared out all the old connections (and fixed popup blocker problems when trying to reauthenticate) I could create a new connection to OneDrive for Business.  Not sure if that's a permanent solution for me, and I imagine for a lot of folks it's an unacceptable solution.  But it's a solution!

Hi @DonV

Although not ideal, have you tried importing the Excel as a CSV format? If not, might be worth giving it a try.

  1. Open your Excel file, save as ".CSV"
  2. Then instead of selecting the "Import from Excel" button, click on "Import from CSV"
    2020-04-02_21-38-17.png
  3. You'll have to map the columns of the CSV to the fields of your entity.
More info about import with CSV: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/sales-professional/import-data

Hope this helps!

Hi all,

My own preference is to use the Import wizard for Dynamics 365.  https://crmbook.powerobjects.com/basics/data-management-in-microsoft-dynamics-crm/importing-data-in-...   It worked when other attempts failed.  It also is great for importing data with relationships that already exist.

Don't know if you ever got this solved, but I ran into the EXACT same problem and this is what worked for me.

From the Connections menu create a new connection to OneDrive. Authenticate as prompted. Then, when you go back to the Get Data menu under Data > Tables  it should work. Extremely counter-intuitive but it seems like it cannot create a connection on its own from the Get Data menu.
