Is there a simple way to copy entity data and webpage setting to other environments?

Hi everyone,

I have 2 environments, 1 production env and 1 sandbox env(full copy of production).

The sandbox is used to create some new web pages or make some tests for unreleased functions.

If everything works, I will copy the entity data and webpage setting from sandbox into production env.

I knew that it's possible to copy entity through solution, but it's hard to use, each time there will be an error, said that "some dependencies are missing".

And web page settings can't be included, either.

Someone also recommended "Migration Tool", which seems can only include entity and often faced issues during import.

Aside from the 2 methods, any other simple ways to copy entity data and webpage settings?

If you have added fields etc that you are using on the Portal then you need to do a move by Solution File as well as a move of the Portal (if all you have done is configured portal pages etc but not added any Entities and Columns in DataVerse, then you can get away with just moving the Portal).  I'm afraid you'll just have to get used to resolving Solution File dependencies.

To move the Portal itself either use the Configuration Migration tool with the appropriate schema for the type of Portal you have installed https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/powerapps/maker/portals/admin/migrate-portal-configuration  OR their is a tool in XrmToolBox (xrmtoolbox.com) to move the Portal.

Hi @Audreyma ,

If you are having trouble with the configuration migration tool or any other XRM toolbox.  If you prefer a manual copy then the following is the way.

For Entity data

Step 1:  Log into make.powerapps.com > Choose your environment > Tables

Step 2: Select your table > Data Tab > In the Data menu > Either choose "Edit data in Excel" or "Export Data"

ragavanrajan_0-1618884976065.png

3. If you choose Edit data in Excel > Then save as Excel file in your one drive

In your Target environment

1. Same steps up to step 2

2. Now in the Data menu > Choose "Get Data" and choose Excel

3. It will prompt you to pick the file from your one drive and fill in the necessary credentials

4. Then your data will be loaded into your target environment

Note: Advanced: You can also use Dataflows for a scheduled run for the same operation.

For Webpage Setting:

1. You have no other choice other than manually doing it in your target environment.

Note: In the recent release,  official CI/CD is introduced but it is still not open to the public. Click here to read it.

Hope it helps.

@ragavanrajan  you have to be careful with the Excel option as they are also talking about doing records such as Web Pages as well - there are plugins that run on create of a Web Page (creates the localized copy based on the root ) the Schema provided for the Config Migration Tool disables all the plugins during import.

@ragavanrajan

Thank you for your suggestion!

I have a question. In the target env, do I need to create a table first?

Will the entire entity be copied, or only the data copied through this import?

Actually, I just tried but failed at the last step, the error is said: "cr6f6_id" is the reserved column name for table "cr6f6_".

The entity fields created in the original environment all started with "cr6f6".

hI @Audreyma ,

The answer is no need to create the table first in your target environment. It depends on your need. Adding a screenshot for your reference. You can load to a new table and map the relevant fields.

Or if the situation changes if you want to continue the process from source to target environment then you need to pick the "Load to Existing table" and make sure you have proper data types.

Hi @Fubar, Thank you for the info. The reason why I mentioned this method is the user prefers a different way rather than a configuration tool or XRM tool box.

Hope it helps.

Hi @ragavanrajan

I chose to import data through CSV file.

Even if I selected "Load to a new table", data import failed as well, said that "cr8f8_id" is the reserved column name for table "cr8f8_".  .

And I found that data type is not identified correctly, option set will be recognized as "text".

For the error itself, I guess it's necessary that column name should be unique in Dataverse, so I can't use the same name in 2 environments.

But it seems to be impossible to set new column name in the target env.

Hi @Audreyma , Yes that's right. You have very limited options here. Since you have asked for the manual way this is one of the ways you can load data into the target environment.

You can try the XRMToolbox Attribute factory for bulk upload. Link here. https://www.xrmtoolbox.com/plugins/Javista.AttributesFactory/

Hope it helps.
