Display Shelter Name - Model-driven app Requirement

Hi everyone,

 

I am stumped on figuring out how to display the name of shelters in my 'Animal' table view.
The first requirement states "View a list of animals displaying name, type, shelter status and shelter name".

 

Shelter name doesn't exist in the 'Animal table final' Excel data but does exist in the 'Shelter table final' Excel data.
I am trying to display the 'Shelter Name' in a new column in the 'Animal' table by checking if the value in my 'Current Locations' column in my 'Animal' table matches the 'ShelterID' from the 'Animal Shelter' table. If it does match 'ShelterID', display the 'ShelterName' from the 'Animal Shelter' table.

I tried this as a PowerFx formular column called 'Shelter Name', but I couldn't get the attributes I need.

I also added the 'ShelterName' column as a related column in the 'Active Animals' table view for the 'Animal' table, but no results appear. See Animal_Table_View_Related_ShelterName_Column.png

 

My 'Current Locations' column is a PowerFx formula column with the following code:

Although I have followed the learning material, this one has gotten me stuck. I know there is a way, I just can't see it.

I would really appreciate guidance on this so that I can move forward with the other requirements.

I am trying this way but I am getting an error when using the formula.  

No problem, I'm glad I could help! I know what you mean about making things more complicated than it needs to be.. been there, done that! 😂

What does the error message say? Maybe there's an issue with the lookup column or the relationship between the tables?

I am not even able to finish typing the formula. It does not populate like yours does.  I have started over so many times.

Not sure if I can help, but are you using the same column names as I've shown in my screenshot? If your columns are named something other than IntitialShelter (in the Animals table) and ShelterName (in the Shelter table), you need to update the formula to use your column names. 

 

That squiggly red line and error message will show up until the formula is working. Does it stop you from typing? In that case, it might be a bug?

Thanks for this solution but for some reason I'm not able to mirror it in my own table. I don't get an error, but the column returns a blank result. Only change on mine is the is the lookup column is named slightly differently. 

Any help is greatly appreciated 😀

The column InitialShelter1 should be a lookup column to the Shelter table, where it will get the values from ShelterName. If the result returns blank, maybe there could be something wrong with the relationship between the tables Animal and Shelter? Here's a few screenshots of how I've set up my columns, maybe it can be of some help?

Yes, my column names are the same just used what was on the tables.  I got it to work but did not populate any data

How do I populate the Initial Shelter look up? At the moment it's empty with no Shelter IDs. Is this correct or should I have imported data to this field?

Hello @JB-Wan_Kenobi,

 

The ShelterIDs should be imported when you imported the Shelter table. Set up the primary column as "ShelterID". Then when you create the column InitialShelter in the Animals table, you set it up as a lookup to the Shelter table. When you import the Animals table, the InitialShelter column will be populated with the ShelterIDs from the Shelter table.
