Power BI Report for Final Challenge

Hi All,

I am stuck with the Power BI report and unsure how to navigate the Dimdate, including connecting it to the Animal table and using the VAR X. I am also unable to filter the dates to connect them with the table.

I would appreciate any guidance.

Hi @ZeeScience,

Have you tried removing the Fiscal Year part and only keeping the month in your rows or using the month from your dimDate table that isn’t part of the hierarchy?

Hi @ZeeScience,

I personally feel “In Foster Home” is the only valid parameter that determines the animal is fostered. Claimed for Adoption is different to In Foster Home as these would be different families (people). I am not sure how you account for multiple values in a calculation, below are my DAX formulas that focus on a single choice.

These are the MyMeasure formulas which help with the calculations in your visuals. You will need to adjust the naming to suit your data.

Total Animals Rescued = CALCULATE([Total Animals], cr0f4_animals[Shelter Status] = "Adopted")
Total Animals Fostered = CALCULATE([Total Animals], cr0f4_animals[Shelter Status] = "In Foster Home")
Total Animals = COUNTROWS(cr0f4_animals)

Hi @Grkm_A,

Your data model looks fine, I think the issue may be in how your visuals are configured.

Think about the data you want to display and how you want it to appear. The visual you choose will have different results to another visual type and also the table data you place into those visuals and in what order will play a big role.

In your first image you are using the Total Animals calculation as the values. This won’t show month information in your month rows as it’s calculating total animals.

Experiment with your table columns in different combinations to see if you can get meaningful data. If this doesn’t work then there may be other underlying issues.

@Corry- Can you please help on the filter logic part ?
how can we apply the filter for the last 1 month or 3 month for our measure in a same page  and display the animal columns in a table visual ?

Hi @Poovarasan27,

I am using a Date Slicer to manipulate the period of time, i.e., last 1 or 3 months. When I make a change in this slicer, it reflects across all my data visualizations.

I am using the 'Date' from my dimDate table in the field property of the slicer.

I have applied this approach to both my reports, one for the last 1 month and the other for the last 3 months.

I didn't create any measures (calculated formulas) to achieve this because my dimDate table has a relationship to my animal table data.

@Corry

I figured what happened. It was because the date format had time in it that is why

@Grkm_A ,

You can create a relationship between "Date of Birth" on your animal table and the  "Date" on Dimdate. Following this interaction, you will be able to perform some functions on the "Date of Arrival" on your visualization dashboard. If you don't have date of birth in your table, you can edit query and introduce this in your table to enable you manage the relationship. I hope this helps.

@ZeeScience ,

Animals "in foster home" are the animals fostered! Others are not fostered but are in the process of being adopted as indicated as "claimed for adoption" or ready for adoption based on passed medical requirements and other factors not indicated in the data.

@Poovarasan27 , please what formula did you use to calculate the Total animals rescued and Total animals fostered. thanks

@TianaFash actually all those animals that are a not adopted or in shelter are actually fostered animals because they have a foster ID associated with them. Fostered means they are not in the shelter anymore meaning they have been fostered and taken to a foster home. An animal with status claimed for adoption is a fostered animal waiting to be adopted, an animal with status ready for adoption is an animal in a foster home waiting to be adopted. If you only say animals with status "In Foster" are the only fostered animals then what happens to animals who just left the shelter and have their status as Claimed for Adoption, Ready for Adoption where do they fall under?
