Making given parameter containing both string and an integer into a condition

Hi guys, I'm looking into how to make a given data from an excel sheet into a condition in a Condition connector. The below screenshot shows set of data in the excel sheet:

image.png

The screenshot illustrates the data in an excel sheet with various alert types: "Red 1", "Red 2", "Red 3", "Red 4", "Red 5". Based on what I have understood, for instance, "Red 1" in the excel sheet contains the word "Red" and a digit "1". I'm looking into how to make the parameter "Red 1" which contains a combination of a string and an integer into a condition in a Condition connector, illustrated in the below screenshot:

image.pngWhen using the condition connector, I understand that if I want to make an integer type of data into a condition in the Condition connector, I would need to format it into an integer. For example, the code would be:

int(items('Apply_to_each')?['Example']). Likewise, for a text, I would need to format it into a string using the following code:

items('Apply_to_each')?['Example'].

In this scenario, the data I'm using for example, "Red 1" contains both a string and an integer from [Alert Type]. I want to make it into a condition in the Condition connector such that if [Alert Type] is < 4, [Alert Type] would focus on parameters of "Red 1", "Red 2" and "Red 3" according to the condition, then go to the next step.

Therefore, in summary:

Finding out what to put in the Condition connector to make the data in [Alert Type] from the excel sheet illustrated from the above screenshot into a condition in the Condition connector, putting into consideration that the data in [Alert Type] have both string and integer elements.

I would appreciate any techniques or methods available! Thank you!

Hi , @Del-Dev

According to your description, do you mean you want to compare the [Alert Type] < "Red 4".

You can try to use this expression in your condition left pane:
int( split( items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'] , ' ')?[1] )

Condition : Less Then

Right Pane :

int('4')

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Thank you for your response! I would like to clarify with you regarding about the code:

int( split( items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'] , ' ')?[1]). What does this code mean in layman terms? I find the code very interesting and I would like to find out more about it.

HI , @Del-Dev

(1) The "items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'] " means each value in your ['Alert Type']. For example , "Red 1", "Red 2".

(2) The " split( items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'] , ' ') " is to split the Text by space:
"Red 1" ===> ["Red","1"]

"Red 2"===> ["Red","2"]

"Red 13"===> ["Red","13"]

(3)The "split( items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'] , ' ')?[1]" is used to get the second position value in the array.

["Red","1"] ===> ["1"]

["Red","2"]===>["2"]

 ["Red","13"] === >["13"]

(3)The "int( split( items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'] , ' ')?[1])" is used to convert the Text to integer:
["1"] === > 1

["2"] ====>2

["13"] ====> 13

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Just out of curiosity, previously the data from [Alert Type] is in this format for e.g. "Red 2" where there is a space between the 'Red' and the '2'. What if the data is presented in the format such that there is no space in between them for e.g. "Red2"? Would there be any changes from the expression you have suggested for the Condition connector above?

Hi, @Del-Dev

You can directly use this expression :
 items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type']

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

So similar to the above post, if I would like to compare the [Alert Type] < "Red4" (with no spacing between 'Red' and '4'), then the expression for the Condition Connector would be as follows:

For the left pane

int(items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'])

For the right pane

int('4')

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi , @Del-Dev

Please try :

For the left pane

int( split( items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'] ,'Red')[1] )

For the right pane

int('4')

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Thank you for the suggestion! I would like to ask if the condition in the Condition connector, [Alert Type] < "Red4" is true and the expected output would be "Red1", "Red2" and "Red3", how do I print it in the email body of the Email connector? Do I just put the expression you have suggested, int( split( items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'] ,'Red')[1] ) into the email body of the Email connector so that I could print "Red1", "Red2" and "Red3" and send it to the recipients?

Hi , @Del-Dev

If you want to send all the Color which < "Red4" , you can not use the condition action.

You need to use the "Filter Array" action. Due to the "Apply to each" action is to loop for each value. it will only get one of the Color in each loop!

Best Regards,

Yueyun Zhang

Hi @v-yueyun-msft

Thank you for the suggestions! Correct, my intention is to use the 'Apply to each' connector to loop each value from each row and in addition, I have email addresses in each row as well. Therefore, I would like to send "Red1" to email recipient 1 and "Red2" to email recipient 2 and so on. Therefore, in order to send the "Red1" and "Red2" to each email recipients respectively, does putting the expression you have suggested, int( split( items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'] ,'Red')[1] ) into the email body of the Email connector and send it to the recipients still applies?

Hi , @Del-Dev

Yes , if you want to send the email to each people , like this:
Red1 ---> Person 1

Red2 ---> Person 2

You can use this expression in your email body:
items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type']

The " int( split( items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type'] ,'Red')[1] )" just use to judge in the condition action which means the value in your Text.

For example:
Red1    ----> 1

Red12  ----->12

And the "items('Apply_to_each')?['Alert Type']" means the each loop data in your Apply to each action, which is the "Red1", "Red2" and so on.

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

Thank you for the suggestions! The suggestion helped me accomplished a part of my objectives. In the previous post:

" If you want to send all the Color which < "Red4" , you can not use the condition action.

You need to use the "Filter Array" action. Due to the "Apply to each" action is to loop for each value. it will only get one of the Color in each loop!"

From this, you mentioned that I cannot use the Condition action and I have to use a "Filter Array" to get all the colours in each loop. Therefore, what it means is that I need to replace the Condition action into a "Filter Array" right? If that is the case, do I still need to use the "Apply to each" action before the "Filter Array" action in order to get all the colours in each loop?

Hi, @Del-Dev

Yes , if you just want to send one email and contains the data which < "Red4". You do not need to use this condition action, you can use the Filter array action instead.

For example , this is my test flow and the result:

vyueyunmsft_0-1717651929683.png

You can refer to this:

vyueyunmsft_1-1717652020833.png

int( split( item()?['Alert Type'] , 'Red')?[1] )
int('4')
item()?['Alert Type']

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

In the screenshot from the above post:

DelDev_0-1717661639048.png

What is the expression for the part annotated by the red circle?

Hi , @Del-Dev

This is directly select the "output" of "Create HTML table" in dynamic content.

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

I see I see! So, what is the usage of the "Create HTML Table"? Does it help to display the "Alert Type" as a bolded header and display the "Red1", "Red2" and "Red3" in the email body? And is it compulsory to use "Create HTML Table" to achieve this?

Hi , @Del-Dev

Using the "Create HTML Table" is to make the presentation more intuitive. Of course, if you want to display the text directly in your email, you can do that also!

For your question: Does it help to display the "Alert Type" as a bolded header and display the "Red1", "Red2" and "Red3" in the email body?

Answer: Yes, you are right!😀

If you want to show the "Red1,Red1,Red2,Red3" in email body.

You can refer to :

vyueyunmsft_0-1717664691558.png

So the result is as follows in my email body:

Hi @v-yueyun-msft,

That's coool! So if I want to display the text directly in my email, do I just put the expression: item('Filter_array')?['Alert Type'] in my email body while excluding the "Create HTML Table" to display "Red1", "Red2" and "Red3" in the email?

Hi , @Del-Dev

No , you need to use the Select action to generate an array like this:

["Red1","Red2","Red3","Red13"]

And then use the Join() function in your email body , i have created a test flow above .

vyueyunmsft_0-1717667004945.png

This is the join() function return:
