Flow Error - property 'text' cannot be selected - split(triggerbody()['text'], ';')

Hi there, I'm trying to export a paginated report to Sharepoint, with all parameters as the default except one called "client" that I'd like to cycle through.

I'm following this guide:

https://eriksvensen.wordpress.com/2021/03/28/multivalue-parameters-in-powerbi-paginated-report-when-...

However, I am getting this error message.

Action 'Apply to Each' failed

Unable to process template language expressions for action 'Apply_to_each_3' at line '0' and column '0': 'The template language expression 'split(triggerBody()['text'],';')' cannot be evaluated because property 'text' cannot be selected. Please see https://aka.ms/logicexpressions for usage details.'.

This is my flow so far. The "current item" is from the correct "apply to each"

Does anyone know what might be wrong? Any advice on improvements also welcomed

@Cassifer The Apply to Each action needs an Array variable to loop through. Can you upload a screenshot of the entire flow to provide more context as to what's going on?

Thx!

@creativeopinion Sure can! Please see below:

If some of your records don't have any data in the text field then your JSON may not have a text property (depending on the schema) which would likely cause this error. Can you check your JSON to ensure all records have a text property, and if not we can work from there to try and resolve.

Loop through the Files Returned

The expression in the Apply to Each action is unnecessary. Use the value dynamic content from that action in the Apply to Each action. This will loop through each item returned.

creativeopinion_0-1697904264699.png

Fun Fact: This action name is very misleading. It will return both files and folders.

creativeopinion_2-1697904443408.png

Count Items Returned (optional)

This part is optional but it can help with troubleshooting. Add a Compose action to store the number of items returned from the List files in folder action.

Insert and Expression and use the length() function.

creativeopinion_3-1697904732519.png

Click on the Dynamic Content tab and insert the value dynamic content into the length() function.

creativeopinion_4-1697904801574.png

Filter out Files Only

To filter out Files only, you will need to use a Filter Array action. To learn more about how to use the Filter Array action, please refer to this recent YT Tutorial I uploaded. Tip: Rename your actions to keep things organized!

In the From field, insert the value dynamic content from the List files in folder action. In the first value field insert the Is folder? dynamic content. Leave the operator as is equal to and insert a false function (expression tab). If you are looking for folders only, then you would use the true function.

creativeopinion_5-1697904848473.png

Whenever I use a Filter Array action in my flows I always add a Compose action to store the number of items returned. This helps with troubleshooting and can also be used in a condition action to prevent the flow from continuing on if no items are returned.

creativeopinion_7-1697905040758.png

Just as above, use the length() function and this time, insert the Body dynamic content from the Filter Array action.

creativeopinion_6-1697904991525.png

Run a test. Always test your flow out after adding a few actions before moving on. Verify the counts of items/files returned.

creativeopinion_8-1697905135675.png

I'm a bit unclear on why you are deleting the OneDrive file then continuing on with your flow. Once the file has been deleted, you won't be able to access the dynamic content from that item.

Can you provide a bit more insight as to what you are trying to accomplish. If anything, the Delete File action should be the last action after your other actions have run through.

Hope this helps!

Hi @creativeopinion

Thanks so much for the detailed response!

In summary, the intent of the flow is:

  1. RECURRENCE/LIST FILES IN FOLDER/APPLY TO EACH
    1. Delete existing files in folder
      1.       Users want to see only the most recent version
        1. (thank you for the note re:files/folders – for this purpose it is okay if any+all content is deleted but will keep the super helpful troubleshooting tips in mind)
      2. INITIALIZE VARIABLE/APPLY TO EACH 3
        1. Create Array Variable to cycle through different parameters during report export
      3. EXPORT TO FILE FOR PAGINATED REPORTS
        1. Reference variable created in Step 2 to export file as xls or pdf
      4. CREATE FILE
        1. Create file in Sharepoint

I tried removing the ParameterValues specification in Step 3 and the process is still failing – our data engineer says that he suspects the core issue is at one of the connection pathway

A separate, simplified Flow that just deletes prior files before exporting a paginated report DOES work but that report only uses a Power BI dataset whereas this troublemaker report also directly queries SQL.

If I delete out the parameter portions of this Flow, I get the error message:

“Effective identity on Azure SQL datasources with SSO enabled requires access token to be provided”

These are the connectors we are using and I’ve already re-signed in to everything multiple times

@grantjenkins thank you for the note re: missing text property. Filled in some blank entries and will see if that fixes once our data warehouse refreshes tomorrow morning.

Cassifer_1-1698097064013.png

@Cassifer I see. How are you setting the Array variable in step 2? Where is that content coming from? I'm unclear on this part of your flow.

@creativeopinion

I was attempting (apparently unsuccessfully) to follow this instructional to create an array variable to cycle through a parameter setting upon report export. Thanks for taking a look!

https://eriksvensen.wordpress.com/2021/03/28/multivalue-parameters-in-powerbi-paginated-report-when-...

@Cassifer Based on this screenshot you uploaded from your flow, what is the output of this expression? The tutorial you are referring to uses a manual trigger with a text input. Your flow doesn't include that.

Can you put this expression into a Compose action just above the Apply to Each action and run a test? What is the output?

@creativeopinion

Can do - here is output. It does seem to delete existing files in folder as desired but is failing at the 'Apply to each 3' step with the same error message

Cassifer_0-1698178883693.png

@Cassifer It's failing cause your array isn't able to be created from nothing. As mentioned in my previous response. Put the expression into a Compose action (exactly as you have it in the Apply to each 3 action and run a test. Put the Compose action after your initialize variable action. I would imagine the array is empty. You don't have any content in your trigger—your trigger is different than that of the tutorial you shared.

Hi @creativeopinion,

It was my understanding that the first 'Apply to Each' is just deleting the existing file in the folder - that step appears to be working both in the Power Automate "test" in functionally (can confirm test file is deleted from the folder). If it makes a difference it is paired with these functions

Cassifer_0-1698191838130.png

At the following following "apply to each 3" action; however, the flow errors out and stops working.

Cassifer_1-1698192000857.png

So the original files delete but I am having trouble exporting fresh files cycling through parameter variable

Apologies if I didn't clarify well before.

Essentially:

  • SECTION 1 (works): Deletes previous files (from "list files" to "delete file" steps)
  • SECTION 2 (doesn't work): Cycles through parameter variable to export new files (from "initialize variables" to "create" file steps)

@Cassifer

Delete Each File Returned

Nesting the Apply to each actions are unnecessary in this part of your flow. You are using the List Files in Folder action. After that action you should be running an Apply to Each action to delete each file returned (if that's what you're intending to do).

creativeopinion_1-1698192826680.png

This is what the start of your flow should look like.

creativeopinion_2-1698192984379.png

Compose the Expression

You need to put the expression you are trying to use in the Apply to Each action into a Compose action for troubleshooting purposes.

creativeopinion_3-1698193122231.png

creativeopinion_4-1698193170140.png

Run a test. When you run a test your should see an empty array—which is why the Apply to each action is failing. You can't loop through an empty array. There's nothing there to loop through.

creativeopinion_5-1698193297182.png

My question from the beginning is where are you returning dynamic content for the array that you are looping through?
