How to Get Flow-Created ID from a new list item that is not entered by the user

6f65e4ac-bc7c-4ca6-9227-74ed8d14b9ec.png

Im a newbie when it comes to power automate and im hoping to get more ideas here.

I have a column called Submission ID that gets generated within the flow to give it an ID.  We Wanted a custom ID so its 123-YYYY-000 (The 000 would be a counter that would go up +1 every time a new item is listed)

What I'm having an issue is obtaining the previous entry Submission ID in order to increment it so that the new list item has a new ID but its +1 of the previous. What i want to do is be able to grab the previous Submission ID and increment it by 1.

Thank you!

Edit: if possible when making the Submission ID, I would rather grab the last 3 digits from the previous row and adding it to the latest row with a +1 increment. Added a screenshot

You can "Get Items" and Order By Modified dsc, and use a Top Count of 1.

Then, in your Compose, you can paste this in as an expression:

@{substring(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value']?[0]?['Title'],0,9)}@{concat(substring('000',1,sub(3,length(string(add(int(substring(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value']?[0]?['Title'],9,3)),1))))),add(int(substring(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value']?[0]?['Title'],9,3)),1))}

I've got two in there, so it looks like this:

Rhiassuring_0-1701999843339.png

The blue part: All it's doing is saying "give me the first 9 characters of the ID." Those are the ones that won't change.

The orange part: You could split this out into 2 composes, where this part: add(int(substring(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value']?[0]?['Title'],9,3)),1)  is in another Compose called something like "get next number in sequence", but I crammed it into the same compose.

It's taking two of those to determine "how many numbers am I, and how many 0s do I need to append to the front?" and then once it answers that for itself, it concatenates the 9-character-substring (from the first part) to the second part (our now 3 character sequential number.)

Then you can just use the output from this Compose as your new ID.

IN CASE YOU WANT TO SEE IT SPLIT INTO TWO COMPOSES...

(I feel like a jerk leaving the big expression because it can be a tad overwhelming...)

It would look like this instead:

Rhiassuring_1-1702000297357.png

Then the formulas (in order) are:

substring(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value']?[0]?['Title'],0,9)

add(int(substring(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value']?[0]?['Title'],9,3)),1)

@{substring(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value']?[0]?['Title'],0,9)}@{concat(substring('000',1,sub(3,length(string(outputs('Compose_-_Get_New_Number'))))),outputs('Compose_-_Get_New_Number'))}

So its bugging out on when attempting to do substring(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value']?[0]?['Title'],0,9)

and is showing the error above. i added it to the flow i had prior and i have also redone it to see if it was supposed to create an ID itself without the help of my previous flow as seen above.

However this error persists regardless of scenario. snippet 3.PNG

snippet2.PNG This is the column on the list that i wish to grab data from and increment from, the latest being the 005.

Can I please see your flow in edit mode, so I can see the formulas you've used? I don't understand where the "4" is coming from.

Hope this helps, i was trying to figure that out too.

Also i got help in the format option for expressions, thats why there is a long thing for Update Item 2. I wanted to get 000 on my Submission ID as there is no Submission ID submitted when an item is created. that is up to us.

Also the formula i used on the Compose that is erroring is the same one that i copied from you

substring(outputs('Get_items')?['body/value']?[0]?['Title'],0,9).

The flow you see now was the original one before i cut it down to see if it was something else making this error. But the error still occurs regardless. Thank you for your help if you can pinpoint what's going on
