List of all direct reports and subordinates

I'm trying to build a Power Automate flow that will output a list of all every user that reports (both directly and indirectly) to a manager user ID (input).  I have tried to use the "Office 365 Users.Get direct reports" action, save the output to an array variable, and then loop through that array with the same "Get direct reports" action to return the next layer of users.  When finished, I would append all these lists together for a single complete list of all direct and indirect reports.

My issue is there could be 5+ layers of management in the organization, so I would like the flow to keep digging into each user until the "Get direct reports" returns nothing.  There has to be a simpler method than essentially an infinite number of embedded loops!

Hey @JimSutt thanks so much for the detailed solution.

I followed every step, but I'm getting this error

Flow save failed with code 'InvalidVariableOperation' and message 'The inputs of workflow run action 'Do_until' of type 'Until' are not valid. The variable 'FinalArray' must be initialized before it can be used inside action 'Do_until'.'
How do I fix this? I'm a beginner. Please dumb it down for me
TIA

Hello @Manu123 , the FinalArray variable is initialized in step 4.  Please see the full flow in message 42 of this thread.  You will want to save the image to your computer so that you can zoom in as it is quite a large image.  Hope this helps!

Thanks @JimSutt ! That worked.

When I run the test, it says that The 'from' property value in the 'select' action inputs is of type 'Object'. The value must be an array.

Do you know how to go about this?

I have a feeling its because the 'body' I am getting in the dropdown is body (user from graph API)

b of body isn't in caps.

I don't see Body or Value in Get profile

Hi Jim, I'm glad I came across your solution post & it has worked out well for me; thanks for sharing it.
I have a question - I see that the output at the end of the flow does not generate Employee ID numbers for direct reports / subordinates as there's no field in the dynamic content. I found another flow posted by someone to get Emp ID from Graph API - is there a way we can integrate this (small) flow in your solution flow so that the Do Until also gets us Emp ID along with all other existing outputs.

@yat_78 thank you for your kind words!  The short answer is yes, this should work.  I'm not sure of the best place to put the code.  I would recommend adding that logic within the "Apply to each" loop.  Before appending to FinalArray, you could add your function, add the resulting employee number to the employee record, and then append the record to FinalArray.

@JimSutt1 I am completely new to Power Automate and I am wondering if you have a higher resolution of the image in Message 42. I have downloaded the image to take a good look at what you are doing and the resolution is very low when zooming in.

@dwills If you click on the image in the accepted solution and scroll down to the bottom of that image, there is a "Download Image" button in the lower right.  Save that image to your PC and open it in your favorite image viewer.  You can then zoom in on whichever section you are working on.

I can't seem to get the snapshot to focus.  Is there an original?

@JimSutt1 i am following your flow sir, but when i am trying to save I am getting flow save failed with code 'InvalidVariableOperation' and message 'The inputs of workflow run action 'Parse_JSON' are not valid the variable 'ArrayCounter must be initialized before it can be used inside action 'Parse_JSON' how to resolve this

.

@chinnu201995 the ArrayCounter variable is initialized near the top of the flow (step 5) before the main Do Until loop.

@JimSutt @JimSutt1 hello sir, using your code if employee has 200 employees under him it is taking 4-5 minutes of time how to reduce the time

@chinnu201995 , I'm not aware of a method to make this process go faster within Power Automate.
