Parsing String Values Stored Between Two Parethesis From Email Body

Hi - 

 

I'm having difficulties writing logic that extracts string values from the body of an email.

 

The values to be extracted are stored between two parenthesis and are consistently formatted - string always begins with "A" and contains 6 numeric characters (ex: (A123456)). There are multiple, different string values that I am looking to extract with this flow (ex: (A123456), (A234567), (A345678)). Ideally, the parenthesis will not be extracted with the value, but can be extracted, if needed.

 

While the values are consistently formatted, their placement within the email body varies. Generally, one value is contained within a separate paragraph. However, the position of the value within the paragraph differs (the value could be at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of the paragraph). 

 

Is this scenario possible with Microsoft Flow? I've tried splitting the body and extracting using the substring expression, but have not had a positive result. With that, I'm pretty new to Flow, so I'm hoping that I'm missing something. If additional details are helpful, please let me know.

Hi Chelsey, happy to help where I can.

So...the tough part here is that it seems like the number of ID's could be flexible, right?  One email might have 1 dog, where the next could have 3.  I was originally thinking of using Split(), because that's one of my favorites... but it works best when things are consistently formatted.  I know there are third-party tools that will pull out all of the lines with the specified text, but I think those have charges associated with them. 

 

BUT, that tells me it IS possible.

 

I found this article from @faustocapellanj which may help inspire some ideas.   I'll ask around, too...I'm sure someone has a fix.

Hi there.  You can absolutely do this if the inputs are consistently formatted.  Before we get too far into it, though, is there a way you can share the values in the context of the email?  Maybe just the paragraph?  I've built the expression before only to find that the sample didn't represent the actual data.

Chewy (A234567) is a 3-year old spayed Lhasa Apso that can be pulled on 11/23. She does great with people. Some testing is needed to determine if she has an infection on her paw.

This 10-year old male toy poodle (A345678) can be pulled on 11/12. He’s very stressed and likely blind. He is OK with humans, but shy. He would do best in a quiet environment.

Summer of Solutions | Week 4 Results | Winners will be posted on July 24th

We are excited to announce the Summer of Solutions Challenge!    This challenge is kicking off on Monday, June 17th and will run for (4) weeks.  The challenge is open to all Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Copilot Studio & Power Pages) community members. We invite you to participate in a quest to provide solutions to as many questions as you can. Answers can be provided in all the communities.    Entry Period: This Challenge will consist of four weekly Entry Periods as follows (each an “Entry Period”)   - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 17, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 23, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 24, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 30, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 1, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 7, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 8, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 14, 2024   Entries will be eligible for the Entry Period in which they are received and will not carryover to subsequent weekly entry periods.  You must enter into each weekly Entry Period separately.   How to Enter: We invite you to participate in a quest to provide "Accepted Solutions" to as many questions as you can. Answers can be provided in all the communities.
