Peer Assessment Using Power Automate

Hi,

I work in education and looking for a technical solution to support an assessment workflow called peer assessment. Essentially this is a way of allowing students to mark and give feedback on each other's work, which can then be second marked by a member of staff.

Struggling to find solutions, I wondered whether there's any way of using Power Automate to build this out with Microsoft tools. This may or may not be possible, but I'll explain the desired result for anyone with an interest.

  1. Student submits an assignment as a file upload in Forms.
  2. Upon submission, a sub-folder is created using the name of the person who submitted the Form.
  3. The file in the Form is uploaded to this Folder for each user.
  4. When the End Date (deadline) is reached for the Form, a random file (from another user) is emailed to a submitter being sure not to send the user their own work.
    1. Or, access to the file is granted to a random user who submitted work.
  5. The user marks and gives feedback on the submission they received. This is saved somewhere e.g. a SharePoint List.
  6. Someone with more elevated privileges (teacher, administrator) can see all of the feedback and marks in a central dashboard. Ideally there is space for them to add their own marks and comments.

I'm conscious this sounds quite ambitious, but I'd appreciate it if anyone with experience to let me know if this is possible to do or not?

Thanks,

Ross

Hi @ross_p ,

Generally speaking your request is feasible to realize.

Please kindly correct me if I make any misunderstanding to your request:

Students will submit a form attached with a file first. Then a flow will be triggered to create a subfolder to store the file whose folder name will be the submitter's name. Then we will wait until the End date due, at that time the flow will send a random file from other submitter to this student via email and wait for his/her feedback. Finally, we will store the mark and feedback into a list. Admin with more elevated privileges has access to this list.

I will help to make a demo depends on your confirm.

Hi @v-wenjuan-msft that's correct, although some of the suggested steps can be adapted e.g. "a file is emailed to a student" may be better being a file is added to a secure folder only that student, plus an administrator/owner can see. I'll explain the steps below in a bit more detail.

Step 1 - Assignment Submission

An assignment is setup that students will submit a file to. This will likely be a Word document or PDF. This could be a Form, but if there's a way this can be accepted from a Teams Assignment, that could work too. A deadline will be required, which should be easy with Teams Assignments. If Forms works best, the End Date could be used as a deadline.

Step 2 - Assignment File is Stored Securely

When the file is submitted, a sub-folder is created using the name of the person who submitted the Form and the file is added. This is basically to identify who each assignment belongs to. It doesn't have to be a sub-folder per student. If there's a better way e.g. a SharePoint list that contains the student's name in the first column, then the file they submitted in the second column, that would be great too.

Step 3 - Peer Assignment Randomly Distributed

When the deadline is reached for the assignment, a random file is chosen from one of their peers and sent to each student. This could be emailed, but it would work better if this is added to a secure folder and they're emailed with a link to access it. The owner (teacher) should be able to see all submissions, but the students only see their own submission and the peer assignment that's been shared with them.

Step 4 - Peer Marking and Feedback

The student gives a mark and feedback for the submission they received. Again this would ideally need a deadline, so they must do this within a set window e.g. 1 week. This would be ideal if this utilised the Teams Assignment functionality where they have teacher-like privileges like using a rubric. If that's not possible, perhaps a Form might be easiest, where the student mark and feedback goes into a SharePoint List.

Step 5 - Teacher Marking and Feedback

Finally, the teacher who setup the assignment can look at each assignment. They can give a mark and feedback on the two elements. First, to the students for how well they performed the peer marking task. Secondly, to the students for their actual submission.

Ideally for the teacher, this would all be visible in some sort of dashboard in an ideal world. If it was a table, it might look something like this:

Student NameAssignment SubmissionMark from PeerFeedback from PeerMark for Peer Assessment TaskFeedback for Peer Assessment TaskCombined Feedback from TeacherFinal Mark
Word of PDF attachment. This is the mark another student would give the assignment. This is the feedback another student would give the assignment. This is the mark the teacher would give to the student for the effort they put into the peer assessment task. This is the feedback explaining why they got this mark. This is the feedback from the teacher on the assignment submission. Final grade for the assignment, which may be different from what the fellow student gave.

The table above could be split over two lists if easier.

Does this help? I'm conscious this is quite an ambitious request.

Thanks,

Ross
