Sequential Approvals Like in Teams

Hi,

 

I just found out that if we create an approval request in MS Teams, we can specify the order of approvers as depicted below.

If we see the result in the second image, we can see the approval sequence.

How do we achieve this using Power Automate ?

The examples that I can find create two or more separate approvals and you have to open each of the approvals. This is inconvenient during audit and looks unpleasant in the eyes.

The fact that they show in Teams as a single thing doesn't mean they are a single approval flow. They aren't. Teams is just taking the results of a looped approval flow and displaying them together. Behind the scenes it also uses multiple Start and wait for approval actions. Power Automate doesn't really provide a UI layer. You could produce something similar using a combination of Power Apps and a data source like SharePoint. That is essentially what Teams is doing.

There isn't really a similar User Interface available in Power Automate, but if you submit a list of approvers to power Automate all you need to do is add a Start and wait for an approval flow inside an Apply to each loop on that list of approvers to get the same process. The loop will create one approval per user and the second won't go out until the first approval is complete.

Well I wanted it to become one sequential approval instead of several disconnected approvals. Like the one shown in second image. Right now I have to make a custom UI to display and stitch those disconnected approvals into a complete approval flow. Perhaps someday Microsoft will improve the Approval connector.

Hi @iBro - Sequential approvals were supposed to come to Power Automate in release wave 1 2023. However, Microsoft removed it from the release wave, and haven't included it in any subsequent release waves.

Sequential approvals are possible through dataverse table manipulation.

Rezza Dorrani did a video recently on sequential approvals in Power Automate.  Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be an option for me in Power Automate, and I'm not sure why (maybe it hasn't rolled out to Canada yet).  These have multiple steps with different approvers for each step.  This might be what you're looking for.

We are excited to announce the Summer of Solutions Challenge!    This challenge is kicking off on Monday, June 17th and will run for (4) weeks.  The challenge is open to all Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Copilot Studio & Power Pages) community members. We invite you to participate in a quest to provide solutions to as many questions as you can. Answers can be provided in all the communities.    Entry Period: This Challenge will consist of four weekly Entry Periods as follows (each an “Entry Period”)   - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 17, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 23, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on June 24, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on June 30, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 1, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 7, 2024 - 12:00 a.m. PT on July 8, 2024 – 11:59 p.m. PT on July 14, 2024   Entries will be eligible for the Entry Period in which they are received and will not carryover to subsequent weekly entry periods.  You must enter into each weekly Entry Period separately.   How to Enter: We invite you to participate in a quest to provide "Accepted Solutions" to as many questions as you can. Answers can be provided in all the communities.
