Trying to use an IF condition to send different email text.

Each section is pulling from a separate Sharepoint list. The idea is, if the 5 columns are blank isn't filled for any list, a note saying "No updates" will go out. If any of the 5 columns are filled, they'll be sent in an email. I cannot get the condition to recognize when the columns are empty during my test runs.

Hi @Herbertt,

It might be that because every column is on a new line it does not think the GenUpdates is empty (it might have four newline feed characters). Have you tried removing those enters and place all 5 variables on one line, to see if that makes a difference?

Btw, you could also try a length check in your condition instead. Try something like:

length(variables('GenUpdates'))

is equal to 0

Happy to help out! 🙂

@Herbertt As mentioned in a previous post response, you'll need to use a Filter Array action.

creativeopinion_5-1695307794466.png

To check for empty columns you will need to use the advanced mode.

creativeopinion_6-1695307830710.png

@not(empty(item()?['column name here']))

For each column you will need to add a line to your expression (separating each with a comma). The @ symbol only needs to be added at the start of the expression. Because you want to check to see if ANY column is empty, you need to wrap the entire expression with an and() operator.

@and(
not(empty(item()?['Column1'])),
not(empty(item()?['Column2'])),
not(empty(item()?['Column3'])),
not(empty(item()?['Column4'])),
not(empty(item()?['Column5']))
)

Before you even add your email actions to your flow, you should run a test to ensure the Filter Array action is working properly.

Count Items Returned

Add Compose action after the Filter Array action to count the number of items returned.

creativeopinion_7-1695307983193.png

Run a test before moving on. Verify the number of items returned.

Add a Condition

Add a Condition action. Insert the outputs from the Compose action above. Leave the operator to is equal to and enter a 0 in the second value field.

If no items are returned you can place the appropriate actions in the YES branch.

Hope this helps!

If these values are strings, just concat them and check the length:

greater(
	length(
		concat(
			your_value_0,
			your_value_1,
			your_value_2,
			your_value_3,
			your_value_4
		)
	),
	0
)

Thanks @creativeopinion. I am running into an error message after I add the Lists to the "From" section. Any thoughts on what might cause this?

@Herbertt you can only add a single value dynamic content to the from field as I've shown in my screenshot.

The Filter Array action filters a single array not multiple. If you need to filter multiple arrays you need to use multiple Filter Array actions.

Ok. I'll try multiple actions. Thx

Will I need to add separate Compose actions or can I need one with all as inputs?

@Herbertt Sorry, I'm a bit lost on your flow. If you can upload a full screenshot of your flow it would be helpful.

I would also recommend you reviewing how to use a Filter Array action by watching this YT Tutorial. By understanding how the Filter Array action works—it'll help you when you use it in your flows.

The point of the Filter Array action is to filter out an array. If you take a look at my original post, I've used an Advanced expression in the Filter Array action.

You need to have a clear understand on your flow logic before you can start building out your flow. I'm unclear on how your flow is working as the original screenshot you provided wasn't complete so I'm just making a bunch of assumptions which makes it hard to troubleshoot and assist.

Thanks again for your reply. Truly appreciated. I've watched your video numerous times over the last few weeks. I'm starting to think that the filter array might not apply to what I'm trying to do. I'm just not sure.

Flow explained:

Each day vendors fill out a daily recap list submission for each separate brand. The info is compiled from each brand's list to create an automated email (one email). Although each list is separate, there's a "general updates/notices" section that is not brand specific. Right now the email leaves the general section blank if there are notices. I am trying to revise the flow to only insert the general section IF there are entries in the general section of any list. So basically if a general notice is submitted from any list the email will look like this. If not, it'll look the same, just without the "general" section.

This is where I've ended. Whether I have a the column filled or not, it keeps only sending the "if yes" email on the left.
