Variable pulling reference instead of multiple values

Good Day, i am trying to get the values from a choice field that accept multiple Values and put it in a string variable, instead of getting the values, i'm getting the following,

Case

[{"@odata.type":"#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedReference","Id":3,"Value":"CRACKS"},{"@odata.type":"#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedReference","Id":2,"Value":"DENTS"}]

You can pretty much use the same method as I explained above. Since you do this when the item is created, the process is slightly different:

David_MA_0-1680189950176.png

  • When you initialize the variable, choose Array and make the default value []
  • In the Compose JSON Sample action, put in your choice field (the one that doesn't end with Value)
  • Before you add the next actions, run your flow and copy the output from the Compose JSON action in the successful run:

  • Then update your flow and add the Parse JSON action with the content of you choice field (again, without the Value option).
  • The Apply to each action will use the Body from the Parse JSON action.
  • In the Append to array variable, use the Value from the Parse JSON in the Value field.

  • In the Join action set the From field with your variable and join with a comma and space or whatever you want to use to join the values together.

  • Then just follow the steps above for your second choice field.

There are two dynamic content fields on choice fields. For example, if your multiple choice field is named Status, there will be a dynamic field named Status, which returns what you show above, and another dynamic field named Status Value. Choose the one with Value and it will return the value (e.g., CRACKS or DENTS in your example).

Hi @Drew47,

You could convert the Get Items output to xml and use xpath to retrieve the multi-choice values.

Have a look at this thread where @grantjenkins  shared a nice solution approach: https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Building-Flows/Expression-to-Get-DisplayName-from-SharePoint-Peo...

Below is an example

damage_types.png

1. Convert the Outputs to XML in a Compose

xml(json(concat('{"root": { value:', outputs('Get_items')?['body/value'], '}}')))

2. Use the below in the From:

xpath(outputs('XML'), '//root/value')

3. Use the below to retrieve the values of the choice and join them back together as a comma separated string value
You might need to double check if that field name is the same after the XML conversion though

join(xpath(item(), '//DamageType/Value/text()'), ', ')

select_xpath.png

End result would look like the below

select_xpath_testresult.png

Happy to help out! 🙂

Hi David_MA

Please note that this option will enable apply for each like below in the screenshot. This approach won't work because i have multiple columns that accepts multiple values
I used below expression it works fine but output comes with Reference and value. i want output to be only values

split(string(triggerOutputs()?['body/field_21']?['Value']), ';')

I understand now. It is a multi-choice column and not a simple choice column. Are you trying to get the selected choices, so they are comma separated? For example, Cracks, Dents, Total Loss.

If so, I approach this a little differently than the suggestion offered above by @Expiscornovus . At the start of your flow initialize an array variable with the default value of [].

In your initial Apply to each action, you will need to use the Parse JSON action on your choice field. However, you will need to generate a schema. You can do this by using a putting the field in a Compose action and then copy the result from a successful flow run. You can then add the Parse JSON action and paste it into the Generate from sample button.

The add another Apply to each within your first Apply to each with the Body from the Parse JSON action. Inside this Apply to each add an Append to array variable action and use the Value in the Value option.

Then outside of the second Apply to each but within the first, use the Join action with the variable you created. It will look like this:

And it will get you this:

Inside my Sharepoint List i only have two Choice columns. Beltdamage,Damage and both have two choices selected/recorded.

This is how my HTML output looks like after flow ran successfully.

is there any expression i can use to remove this reference? and only display Cracks,Dent as Value.
[{"@odata.type":"#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedReference","Id":0,"Value":"Cracks"},{"@odata.type":"#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedReference","Id":1,"Value":"Dent"}]

Below is my simple HTML code i used inside Initialize variable Value.

Thanks for your rapid assistance David_MA that worked accordingly. i thought there was expression i could use since below expression returned value with no reference but problem it was only returning 1 value.

first(triggerOutputs()['body/field_21'])?['Value']

Hi,

I don't quite understand how the parse JSON works, but i am needing to create an automation that transfers all data from lists 1 and 2 to a 'consolidated' list. Thing is lists 1 and 2 have fields that allow multi-select and i am wanting the data to be transferred into the 'consolidated list' as just plain text (single line of text). Is this possible?

Thanks so much!
