API connector - how does Power Apps licensing works?

Hello,

Can anyone please explain how Power Apps licensing works?

We basically need a connection to an API - that's all.

The API is working on Azure functions.

So, I've bought two licenses ("Run one app or portal per user, stacking licenses for access to each additional as their needs change.")

According to the documentation, they should be somehow "automatically" assigned to the users within an Environment. So, to my understanding, I should create a new environment and then move the app to that environment.

And then the API connection works.

Is that correct? What kind of environment? We are testing a new app.

I've tried contacting support, but they also don't know.

When using a custom connector each user of the Power App will need to have their own license.  That license can be a per user license that is assigned to them or a per app license assigned to the app/environment that they will get when they first use an app shared with them.  But the per app license is still allocated to a specific user.  Its just allocated the first time the user uses the app.  So you can't share a per app license.  But you don't need a new environment.  You can allocate per app licenses to the environment that the app is already built in.  Here's a walkthrough of the steps required. About Power Apps per app plans - Power Platform | Microsoft Docs

Power Apps licensing is extremely complicated and even customer support doesn't understand it.

I've read the documentation you are referring to.

The question is, we would like to have a separate environment for this app - how much does this new environment cost? Where do we find the information about environment pricing?

There is no licensing charge for a separate environment.  You can create as many environments as you have capacity for.  But a separate environment is not required. The capacity you have available is based on license count. You get a base amount with the first Power Apps per user or per apps license and then a certain additional amount per license.  Here's an article on how to create an environment. Create and manage environments in the Power Platform admin center - Power Platform | Microsoft Docs

Allocating per app licenses to an environment is included in the article I referenced.  Check Step #2 here: About Power Apps per app plans - Power Platform | Microsoft Docs.  Once allocated unlicensed users will be assigned a license when they first use an app that is shared with them. You don't have to assign per app licenses directly.
