Annoying Copilot Icon

Please help me turn this Copilot feature off! Every time I am working with a formula it pops up and gets in the way, especially when I am trying to copy and paste. Hopefully I can just switch it off for me as other users might want it.

Great feedback, thank you both.

@rwittels - I'm going to use the session ID to see if we can figure out more.  The experience you're seeing is definitely a bug and not intended, but I can't reproduce, so trying to get as much information as I can and see if we can isolate why that's happening for you.

@wildeH and @rwittels - for the selection, and formula bar losing focus, it makes perfect sense to me, and I see what can cause that.  Would you think the better option is having a more distinct color change between the two or to have nothing appear selected when the formula bar is not the focus?  I'm going to work with our designer on this, but also would love your thoughts.

Thanks for your interest in this issue.

Color is not my issue. I can clearly see that it has greyed out my selection while the Copilot box is open.

My main issue is that if you start a selection in the formula bar and release the mouse outside the formula bar while it is over the Copilot icon, it prevents typing/pasting/deletion in the formula bar until the "Copilot functionality menu" box is closed or focus is returned to the formula bar and a more careful selection is made.

My recommendation is that the Copilot box is opening on an onmouseup event (end of my mouse drag) and should only respond to an onmousedown event or only respond to onmouseup if onmousedown was initiated on the Copilot icon.

I agree with @rwittels that colours won't make a difference. I have no definite recommendation as to which events to respond to, but I do know that the button is over-zealous in my browser and requires me to be unusually attentive as and how I end my highlighting (click and drag) operations.

Usually a little bump against the right side of the mouse when reaching for the keyboard, is enough to "wake the monster", which "sinks my ship".

Completely understood, and yes, looking at these as two different things.  For confirmation, the expected behavior is that the copilot button sits there and has absolutely no involvement in your workflow unless you actively click on it with your primary mouse button.  Our goal is to make it unobtrusive, but whatever this bug is obviously detracts from that experience.

Yes, it does detract. Thank you for summarizing it so clearly.

A related (maybe not) feature is also surprising me time and again. If I happen to select text in the formula bar (using left-click and drag) and inadvertently move the mouse further to the left before letting go of the left mouse button, and if I were so lucky to evade the kamikaze Copilot (sic!), it appears that the text in the properties drop-down gets selected by default. This explains why so often, when I thought I was typing in the formula bar, or copying its content, I was typing C, V or X in the drop-down, or whatever text I had in mind but which had no business in the drop-down.

Here an inline screenshot of that part of my screen, right the moment when I would have started typing, not noticing that the property, not the formula, is now my target.

You may rightly surmize that a) my mouse control is not as it has been and b) I peek at the keyboard maybe too often, meaning I see these adverse events only when it's too late.

We do have the team looking into the bug, thank you for the additional context.  If you find something else that might give us any other clues, let me know!

This is not a bug, sorry. It is an in-your-face approach, as usual, with MS to force-feed a product that fails at every turn. This is happening to me, likely because I use and extremely high DPI on my mouse which inadvertently forces me to release the mouse button while over the Co-Pilot icon, due to it's poorly conceived location.

JUST MOVE IT. We're not dumb, if we want to use Co-Pilot, we can find the button, at the top or to the side, out of the way.

Hey, @rwittels ! I was only able to reproduce your bug in Quantum-based browsers. Do you happen to be using Firefox? It would be a great help to know what browser you're using. In addition, while we look into this bug, it may be beneficial to use Microsoft Edge or Chrome in the meantime to avoid this problem.

Feedback from you as well, since you are also experiencing the issue, would be much appreciated @wildeH

Hi. You are correct. It only happens in Firefox. I will use Chrome going forward.
