Automatically populate a text field in a form based on value from another field

Hello,

I'm stuck trying to automatically fill a text box in a form with the results from another field.

The scenario is that I get a user profile and based on his city, I populate the text field on the form with a value.  I thought this IF statement would work but it doesn't:

If(Office365Users.UserProfile(DataCardValue1.Selected.Email).City = "City Name","Office 1","Office 2")

This works fine if I update a regular text box, just not the form.

If this is in a form, and you have this in a datacard representing a field in your list, then you need to look at your Update property for the datacard.

Assuming you have a Default (on the DataCard) set to ThisItem.yourFieldNameHere

Your Default on the control in your datacard (assuming it is a TextInput control) should be:

Coalesce(
    Parent.Default,
    Switch(Office365Users.UserProfile(DataCardValue1.Selected.Email).City,
        "City Name1", "Office 1",
        "City Name3", "Office 3"
        "Office 2"
    )
)

I included this in a switch statement so that you could add additional conditions as needed.

Now finally, your Update property on the DataCard should be:

yourTextInputControlNameHere.Text

I hope this is helpful for you.

Is 'Traveler Name' the Person column?

If so, then the formula on the DefaultSelectedItems property of the ComboBox should be:

If(TravelerMode = false,
   {
      Claims:"i:0#.f|membership|" & Lower(CurrentUser.mail),
      Department:"",
      DisplayName:CurrentUser.displayName,
      Email: CurrentUser.mail,
      JobTitle:".",
      Picture:"."
    },
    Parent.Default
)

You are missing some required columns in the record.

I'd get rid of the variable in this case also and simply refer to the Radio control to get its value.  But, that's just about getting rid of an unneeded variable.

Hi @StephCORKING ,

I did a video on forms which should help with settings default values of data cards

Hi @RezaDorrani

@that’s a great video and I learned some new things about forms that were frustrating me (especially the sections).  I didn’t see the auto population of the text box.  I’ll watch it again just in case I missed it

HI @RandyHayes

Thanks!  that worked (I needed to remove the Office2 from the example).  It works if I manually select the person but when the person is automatically filled (for example, the current user can select if the request is for him or someone else), the field isn't populated.  The person field is working fine 😕

@StephCORKING

Actually, I forgot a comma at the end of the "Office 3" in the formula I provided.

Are you sure you have the correct matching city information in the office 365 profile?

I would put a label on your screen and set it to:  Office365Users.UserProfile(DataCardValue1.Selected.Email).City

to make sure that what you expect is getting returned base on the selected user.

@StephCORKING

So, I'm not entirely following then the problem you are having.  Can you provide a screenshot and some more details on what is happening (or not happening)?

Photo 2 someone elseePhoto 2 someone elseePhoto 1 Request is for mePhoto 1 Request is for meHi Randy,

When the application starts, the connected user credentials are stored.

  • On this request page, there are radio buttons where the user says if the request is for him or for someone else (variable is called TravelMode).  If the request is for the user, the person field is filled automatically (and when finished, the person field won't appear).

First screen shot is when the user is making the request for himself and the field that you helped me with is MyOffice (this field is needed because we have 2 locations in the same city but the GAD uses this field to differentiate.  I need to know the correct office location to assign the item to the right travel co-ordinator in my flow).

The second screen shot is when the user is making the request on behalf of someone else.

I think it has something to do with how I am populating the person field automatically because the direct manager field (another person field) is giving me the same problem - if I enter the traveler name, it gets the manager fine but if I auto populate the traveler name, it doesn't.   For autopopulation of the traveller name, I put this in selected items:

If(
TravelerMode = false,
{
'@odata.type': "#Microsoft.Azure.Connectors.SharePoint.SPListExpandedUser",
Claims: "i:0#.f|membership|" & CurrentUser.mail,
DisplayName: CurrentUser.displayName
},
ThisItem.'Traveler Name'
)

Maybe I should open another thread as I'm kind of going off subject here?!
