Automatically reduce filter on input

I want to have an input form that shows similarly entered records in the past

So I have a input form next to a gallery.

On my gallery I have set the Items to be:

If(IsBlank(DataCardValue2.Text),File,Search(File,DataCardValue2.Text,"Actor"))

but it always shows all rows and never changes whether I add text to the textbox or not.

Any ideas?

Forms, by default, will be in "Edit" mode. If you want the form to be placed in "New" Mode, you need to call the NewForm() function. You can do this when the screen becomes visible by hooking this function up in OnVisible of the screen

Screen1.OnVisible = NewForm(Form1);

Can you please try the following instead:

    gallery.Items = Filter(File, DataCardValue2.Text in Actor)

And let me know what happens?

Hi 00,

You could also try to set the Items property of the gallery as:
If(IsBlank(DataCardValue2.Text),File,Filter(File,DataCardValue.Text in Actor))

Hope this can also be a reference for you.

Hi 00:

Additional information extracted to "alert" that something might goes wrong.

...The Search function finds records in a table that contain a string in one of their columns. The string may occur anywhere within the column; for example, searching for "rob" or "bert" would find a match in a column that contains "Robert". Searching is case-insensitive. Unlike Filter and LookUp, the Search function uses a single string to match instead of a formula....

Could you check:

- Are all the records containing "...Actor..."

Just additional info to share and reminding ourselves.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Just found a bit more time to take a look at this

I tried the suggestions and none made any difference. They work fine if I put

"A" in Actor

but not if I put

DataCardValue2.Text in Actor

I then tried putting a new textbox on the screen and using that as the entry. that works perfectly and in realtime

So there is something unusual about the DataCard and DataCardValue that is not firing the event needed to cause the update in other controls

Even setting the text property to the DataCardValue2.Text value - it never updated.

Perhaps this is something to do with the data binding of Card items... I'll have to learn a bit more about how PowerApps does this.

Even setting the OnChange property of the DataCardValue2 TextBox to

TextBox1.Text = DataCardValue2.Text

doesn't work. Changing the value in the DataCardValue2 textbox does not update the TextBox1 text value.

TextBox1 is the texbox that is correctly driving the filtering of my gallery does work, so I was seeing if I could somehow chain these (to troubleshoot)

Is it not possible to have DataCard textbox properties drive other on-screen controls?

Still stuck on this. Any ideas?

You can consider putting the condition within the Filter itself.

Filter(File,
If(IsBlank(DataCardValue2.Text),true,
DataCardValue2.Text in "Actor")
)

This means "Filter the File datasource to show all records if DataCardValue2 is blank, otherwise, use the condition."

It could also be that DataCardValue2.Text cannot be referenced outside of its container. This was a bug long ago.

It is not possible for controls to imperatively drive other controls in PowerApps. The "=" symbol is an equality operator in PowerApps, not an assignment operator. Please see this thread for more information on the topic:

https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/PowerApps-Forum/OnSelect-not-firing-on-certain-screen/m-p/9677#M...

You can still have controls drive other controls, but that process needs to happen via dataflow. The latter controls have to declare their inputs as functions of the former controls' outputs, as one would write expression logic in Excel.

Re. your original post/issue, I have filed a bug and will ask the PG to investigate. Please stay tuned.

Hello -

What have you set Form1.Item to? If this property is not set, it will be null and hence IsBlank(DataCardValue1.Text) is true. This is what is causing the gallery to show all records.

Forms require both DataSource and Item property to operate in Edit mode which is the default. If you want to place the form in new mode, you don't need to set Item as it will be the constructed for you by utilizing the default values of all the fields (you do this by calling NewForm(Form1) function)

Ideally, we should be notifying you that the Item property is not set and the form is in Edit mode. That's a bug on PowerApps team and we will look into it. Thank you for informing us of this issue.

Hope this helps.

Thanks
