Bug: Grey Screen of Death

Last week when I saved over an existing app in the cloud, there was a 3 minute delay when clicking the app in a browser before it would be open. It shows what I term the "Grey Screen of Death" while I wait. It is colored by the programed color if I open the app from Dynamics 365. That delay gradually increased to 5 minutes this week. It was alright as long as the app eventually opened. No big deal. I can wait a few minutes for the app to be ready.

However, today, my app was stuck at the grey screen of death after some small changes I saved last night. To be clear, on my computer that I use to edit the app, the app opens in regular Chrome Browser. But when I open the app in incognito mode to simulate a public computer, it will not open. I tested in a limited user account and my main account. Neither worked in incognito and neither worked on the Chromebook.

Today few of the students in class were able to open the app on their Chromebooks. I tried clearing browsing data, but I was still stuck at the grey screen. I do not see any loading progress that would suggest that the app were loading in the background. If there is a pattern to who was able to open the app, it would be that the students who use the apps more seemed to be the ones who were able to still access the app.

Besides clearing the browsing data and restarting the computer, what can I try to get the app working again?

@Ryanmch,

I think I figured out my problem. I don't have conclusive evidence yet, but it is a good hunch.

Since there was no pattern to why the app refused to open due to changes I made, I think one possible reason why the app did not open is that I saved over the app too soon.

The packaging of the app takes a dedicated 10 minutes--I think that is only for heavy apps. In that time, saving over it could be what makes it corrupted on the cloud.

Again, I do not have evidence since I haven't had a chance to test it out completely. This might be a direction the team could look into though.

I am receiving the grey screen error again in IE 11 dynamic 365. Tried opening 2 separate apps and both fail to load. Also tried in private browsing and does not work.

Webplayer, Czech version

I have the same problem - I can not load any apps (event from original Microsoft - for example Budget Tracker)

IE,Edge,Chrome,Firefox - nothing.

I can only open apps in Preview mode (both WebStudio and Studio) and in this mode everthing  working

But my college open everthing.

Still happening for me too...

We are aware of this issue and it is actively being worked on.

The related issue can be found at https://powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/PowerApps-Forum/PowerApps-web-player-not-loading-apps/m-p/17501#....

Please try again and let us know if you are still experiencing the issue.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

This should now be resolved. We just pushed an update to fix this issue, and apps should launch successfully again.

If anyone is still seeing this issue, please reply back and let us know.

Ryan Jansen [MSFT]

The fix for grey-screen did occur on Wednesday, but I am still having the issue in which opening my newly saved app is delayed 10 minutes and fails.

I have disproven my earlier gut instinct that the app was failing to open because I had saved on top of it as it was being deployed on the web. I tested this by writing to the cloud having not written to it in days. I am going back to my earlier thoughts that something in the formulas is not readable by PowerApps. Again, there is no pattern to what changes work/don't work, which makes it very frustrating to wait 10 minutes to find out.

I ran some more tests to find out what is causing the apps not to open in the webplayer.

I have 3 versions of my app:

  • main: this is a known stable version, the one that my users primarily use
  • beta: this is like the "slow ring" for Insiders
  • alpha: I save on this file just to test things out, whether it works or not is not as much a concern. This is like my "fast ring"

The last time I saved was onto my main app. It included some new features and everything worked--I waited the 10 minutes for the app to be deployed. Students were able to use the app the next day after the Wednesday bug. No problem. I also saved the same copy onto my alpha version.

Today I made some new changes and saved again onto the alpha version. My changes did not work--I waited the 10 minutes to deploy but I got the white screen. So I opened up the old version and saved it again on top of the alpha version. It still gave me the white screen after 10 minutes. If the original file saved and was able to open in alpha, then it should be able to save and open again. Unfortunately, it did not work. That makes no sense to me.

So I tried another test by rolling the alpha version back to a working version--I still get the white screen. No luck.

I have the msapp files if you would like to test it out.

I am really sorry that you are running into these issues. We have been investigating this on our end, the ten minute time is happening due to the time it is taking to generate a package for your app. This is very unusual and we have been trying to anaylize a function which is taking majority of the time.

I have dropped you a private message with my mail id, it will be great if we can get the .msapp file, it will help us root cause the issue faster.

This still appears to be happening for us on Internet Explorer, is this now resolved and if so any idea why it's still happening? Works fine on Chrome or Edge but we still have a lot of IE users.
