Can I Change the DefaultSelectedItems property from Parent.Default to blank when another ComboBox Value is changed?

Hello,

I have form that is connected to a gallery. There are a few Combobox's that are dependent on each other. When trying to edit the form when I make a change to ComboBox 1 then ComboBox2 should reset so the user knows they have to select for that dropdown again. Currently with ComboBox 1 having the OnChange to reset the ComboBox 2 control it does not clear out the value from the gallery. This is all tied to the DefaultSelectedItems Property which is set to Parent.Default. I think if I can get this property to be blank when ComboBox 1 is changed. I have not been able to figure this out. I have two different If formula's that return errors. Images below?

Hello,

Yes you can do what you are doing however, the issue is that you are comparing the Text Value of what's in the other Combo not the record value you must have bound there. Secondarily you are in Control A and using Parent.Default, which would be the Parent.Default of the current Control not the other controls Parent.Default value.

Is that a look up or a choice in the other combo?

So change it to, .Selected not .Selected.Value and then use the top one (not the bottom one). (I'm making an assumption here based on the error)

Also, I try to tell this to everyone. If you share code, please do it in using the </> in the bar. It makes it way easier for us to respond with code fixes, versus reading images. Don't worry everyone does it lol but everyone who learns the other way helps.

Lastly you may need to also do this.

In ComboBox1 OnChange

Set(ComboBox2Reset, true);

Set(ComboBox2Reset, false);

And in the ComboBox2.Reset property add ComboBox2Reset. This will force it to reset and leverage the new default each time you do onchange of ComboBox1.

Try this on the DefaultSelectedItems of ComboBox2

If(
    cbDivision_SR.Selected.Value = LookUp(yourListName, ID = 1, choiceColumnName_2).Value,    
    Parent.Default,
    Blank()
)

Change

LookUp(yourListName, ID = 1,

To match the Items property of your form. For example, if you use variables for your Form Item (eg vMySelectedRecord) you can change the above formula to

If(
    cbDivision_SR.Selected.Value = First( vMySelectedRecord.choiceColumnName_2 ).Value,    
    Parent.Default,
    Blank()
)

ComboBox1 item is a Distinct. See below for formula. I tired what you said and I still get the error but it has changed a bit. Incompatible Types for comparison. These types cannot be compared: Record,Record.

Also a bit more info that might help:

Both Gallery and Form DataSource = DataSharepoint

Form Item = Gallery.Selected

Form Mode = Edit

ComboBox1 DefaultSelectedItems = Parent.Default

ComboBox1 Item =

Distinct(
    'Activity Drop Downs',
    Division
)

ComboBox2 DefaultSelectedItems Originally = Parent.Default

ComboBox2 DefaultSelectedItems Now =

If(
    cbDivision_SR.Selected = Parent.Default,    
    Parent.Default,
    Blank()
)

I am still learning all of this and got confused with your solution. I tried this:

If(
    cbDivision_SR.Selected.Value = First( Gallery2.Selected ).Value,    
    Parent.Default,
    Blank()
)

and this:

If(
    cbDivision_SR.Selected.Value = LookUp( Gallery2.Selected.Location ).Value,    
    Parent.Default,
    Blank()
)

And no luck.

To answer your question my comboboxes are setup as follows:

ComboBox1:

• Single select
• Defaultselecteditem:

Split(
    Parent.Default,

• Item:

        Sharepoint,
        Combobox1.Column

    Value <> Blank()
)

ComboBox2:

• Single Select
• Item:

Filter(
    Distinct(
        Filter(
            Sharepoint,
            Combobox1.Column = Combobox1.Selected.Value
        ),
        Combobox2.Column
    ),
    Value <> Blank()
)

• Defaultselecteditems: 

Split(
    Parent.Default,
    ","
)

Form:

• Form Mode = Edit
• Items = Gallery.Selected

I need Combobox2 to display the gallery item value when loaded. If the user changes Combobox1's Value I need Combobox2 to display blank so the user knows to reselect a value. After the user submits the updates Combobox2 goes back to displaying the gallery item value.

I finally created a solution for this problem. I wanted to post it in case someone else needs something like this.

On my Combobox1 OnSelect:

Set (ComboBox1Changed, true)

Then Combobox2's DefaultSelectedItems:

If(
    ComboBox1Changed,
    Blank(),
    Parent.Default
)

Then on the Save Button's OnSelect Property I added:

Set (ComboBox1Changed, false)

This makes it so if you have 2 dependent ComboBoxes and you want to have the form in Edit Mode so your user can make updates by default it will show the Parent.Default Item in Combobox2 but if the user changes Combobox1 then it will show blank so the user knows they must make a new selection.
