Canvas Form with dropdown from SPlist

Hello

I have a New Employee Form. Its a SP list, that I am creating a canvas app for.

This app has multiple dropdown to collect New Employee's Location, Unit, Dept. And each of these have their own SP list, I am connected to. (data source). It all works fine in the form. After submitting, the values I chose from Location, Unit, Dept drop downs, they dont display in my new form I just submitted in my New Employee SP list.

My new record in New Employee List display everything i submitted, except these dropdowns. They either show up blank or show up as "Enter Choice # 1" lik the default drop down choices, without the external data connection.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Its a simple dropdown choice. No filtering, no cascading. Nothing.

Thanks,

NP

Could you provide the name of the only column in your "Country" list? Is it the default "Title"? Then, in the Update property, you need to write this formula:

Dropdown1.Selected.Title.

If you customized the name of the column in your list, as "customname", just replace "Title" with that "customname".

You should be able to check what error you get checking that same update property. Does it say something like "Name is not valid. Text is not recognized". If that is your error, it's because your calling Text as a property of Country, which does not exist.

Hello @nphurbu What do you have in the DefaultselectedItem property in each of the datacard control?

and you can also send a snapshot, so that we can understand the issue clearer.

What do you have on the defaultselecteditem and the Update property of the datacard control ?

Update propety must reflect the datacard selected function e.g (DataCardValue15.Selected) while the defaulselectedItem property must have (Parent.Default)

Hope this helps

Hi @nphurbu .

So, to understand it right, you got configuration lists for all the dropdowns in the form, but in the list those fields are single text fields or choice fields? I ask because you say that the new record shows as Blank or Enter Choice #, but also say that each dropdown has its own master list.

If they are single text fields in the list, it´s possible you did not link the dropdown you added to the card to its update property, so it's still using the text input created by default. If they are choice columns, the card would have dropdowns by default, so I suppose you should not have a different configuration list to provide the possible values to those dropdowns.

Could you please make this clear?

Hi Bidey

Thanks for your response.

Yes, my Location Datacard has "Update = LocationValue.Selected" . and

the "LocationValue"Dropdown has the "Parent.Default" selected in the DefaultSelectedItems property.

Is there anything I need to do on the Sharepoint Column side, where I can simply connect this "DropDown" column to my LocationList on the SP?

Thanks again !

NP

Hi Leaandrovegacr

The location column is a "Choice" column in SP list.

Location List datasource is coming from SPList called Location. It has about 30 location names in 1 column.

I can attach the datasource and preview it fine. But when I submit it, the LocationValue.Selected isn't showing up in my New Employee SP list, where i am submitting the form to.

In our previous infopath form, we have the same setup. Multiple Dropdowns with their own source from SP list. and worked fine after submitting to our SP Document library in our old onpremise sp site.

In the new SP site, we are using "New Employee Form" list, to submit/save all our new employee record.

Thanks again for your time and insight.

I see. So, you could change the Location type to single line of text, instead of choice, for the update from the dropdown to replicate. Is that change possible in your configuration?

Otherwise, you could use the Choices function as the dropdown datasource, not the Masters List.

If I understand you right you have two different data sources, one in the Masters List and another one as options in the Choice column, so that may lead to conflicts.

Correct. Infact, I have more than 5 datasources in this one application. Because, I have to pull Location, Job Title, Department, and other dropdown choices from SPlists.

This one application has it's own data source, which is where it submits to, and updates to.

Okay, changing all the columns to Single line of text, instead of Choice, should fix your issues.

If you still need to restrict the options in the same SharePoint list where the registers are going to be created, you could consider using LookUp columns instead of Choice ones, to keep a single source of truth. Here is a little guide on how to use LookUp columns with PowerApps:

PowerApps SharePoint Lookup Column + PowerApps Dropdown Example - SPGuides

So I changed my LOCATION column to "Text Field" on the Master List.

Original Location Field in the form was Text Field. Removed that and added a new DropDown1 and connected the data to Location list.

DataCard "Update" = DropDown1.Selected (For some reason, DropDown1.Selected.Value, or DropDown1.Selected.Text both doesn't work)

and I get the error message that, the Location Field is expecting a TEXT value.

Yes, when you send "selected" it tries to send the full object to the list. Neither "Value" nor "Text" will work as those are not valid names of any column in the Locations list. Try to enter the name of the column you have in your Locations list, it should work that way. Autocomplete will help yu to fill the name of the given column, when you write the dot after "Selected", some options should appear.
