Check if Email field is empty

I have a plain text field, that I'm using to store an email address (in SharePoint Online).

My Power App seems to have realised this field is an email.

On my Display form, I've set it to display as "View Email" - which works great.

However, I want to hide the field if it's empty.

But IsBlank and IsEmpty don't work.  It would appear that any tests on the field get presented with:

.+@.+\.[^\.]{2,}

as the content of the field, regardless of whether there's an email address (or any text for that matter) present or not...

Any ideas?

Sounds like a bug...

Hi @Craig_Humphrey

I've been unable to reproduce your issue.

If I understand correctly, you have a SharePoint list with a single line text field for email addresses. You want the field to disappear if there is no value in the SharePoint list.

Set the visible property of the Datacard that contains your email field to:

!IsBlank(DataCardValue)

Where "DataCardValue" is the name of the text box control on that card.

Unless I'm misunderstanding a requirement.

I was using the field from the datasource (see attached screenshot), but even when I use the DataCardValueXX.HtmlText, it has data in it too! See second screenshot.

I've attached two screenshots.  The cursor is to the right of the L in Email (or the final T in HtmlText), so the current "value" is shown below it.

FYI

For now I've "cheated" and used the following for Visible:

Len(DataCardValue32.HtmlText) <> 22

Where 22 is the length of "<a href='mailto:'></a>"

That's a pretty greasy fix 😆

I've been able to reproduce the issue, it appears to occur (at least for me) when the email field is not being filtered properly. For example, in my TestList SPO list I have a field called email. Create a label with just Email as the text property, without letting it know what to filter for, I get your error:

Annotation 2019-12-19 124548.png

But if I make a label with proper filtering, then the email displays correctly:

Annotation 2019-12-19 124603.png

So we would have to take a look at how your Email field is being used in the full formula.

I normally use the IsMatch so if for example I had a TextInput and then a label that shows Yes if it is an email address and No if not I could use:

If(IsMatch(TextInput1.Text,Email),"Yes","No")

You can change up the concept for what you need but it is pretty handy for email address validation. It is looking for the proper format and everything to see if it is a "valid" email address that was entered.

Thanks Rebecca,

yeah, but that would hide invalid emails...  which just hides a problem... 🙂

Plus, as I've discovered in the client's data - they've sometimes put multiple emails in the field... 😞

@Craig_Humphrey I've just tried this at my end and I can hide the DataCard using:

If(IsBlank(ThisItem.FirstApproverEmail),false,true)

Setup & pic:

- DisplayForm linked to a SP list

for testing I set the Form Items property to First(mySPList) but in an app this would usually be set via a gallery selection - or some other means

- SP List has single line of text field which holds email addresses

- I tested using DiplayMode.View & Email, both would hide when email address was removed from the SP List

Email Error.jpg

Note: this is just a testing app I use and the top scribble outs are other things I've tested

Does this work at your end?

Maybe that won't work for what you are needing.

I typically use it when they are doing a new request and I put a label below the text input that says "Please enter a valid email address" that has the visible property of If(IsMatch(TExtInput.Text,Email), false, true) and then I disable the submit button if the label is visible. To add more than one email you would have to separate boxes for the input and then use Concatenate to combine them into one field separated by ";" for your SharePoint list.

Anyhow, sounds like you found a solution that worked for you.

Thanks.

This is a detail form (navigated from a gallery) so the Default value of the DataCard is ThisItem.'E-Mail', so First() doesn't work in this context.
