Concat Combobox.SelectedItems from other gallery in same application

Hi,

I am working on an application, in which each project has an editscreen with various comboboxs from which "Pillars", "Tech Partners" and "Senior Advisors" can be edited. All this data gets stored in one excel "MainTableSPM".

A new addition to the application is a seperate browsegallery for Senior Advisors, which adds information to "SeniorAdvisorSPM" excel table. I would like to drag just the SeniorAdvisorName into the "MainTableSPM" from the combobox.

To give an example I have the following properties in the "Tech Partners" combobox:

Label of ComboboxTechPartners (Update property):

Concat(ComboBox1.SelectedItems, Value, " , ")

TechPartnerDataCard (DefaultSelectedItems property):

If(EditForm1.Mode = FormMode.Edit, RenameColumns(Split(Parent.Default, ","), "Result", "Value"), Table())

TechPartnerDataCard (Items property):

[" ", "H2O", "InnTheBox","Pisano", "Tarentum", "Locatium", "Uservision","Game Play","Ritums"]

The above works perfectly. But since the [] Items property won't get updated when a new SeniorAdvisor gets added to SeniorAdvisorSPM I need to drag the information from the SeniorAdvisorSPM table into the Items property as follows:

SeniorAdvisorSPM.'Senior Advisor'

 However, when I do that I get an error in the Update property of the label:

Concat(SeniorAdvisorCombo.SelectedItems ,Value, " , ")

With the error "The function Concat has some invalid arguments: Location 'SeniorAdvisorEdit.Update' This is the label in the editform for the project which adds information in the MainTableSPM.

@Anonymous

I built an example with 2 tables

AdvisorsTable

  • 'Senior Advisor' -  has the name of the advisor

BookingsTable

  • ID - a unique number for the booking
  • MyAdvisor - a text string with one or more names separate by comma (e.g. "Erin Smith, James Connor")

I was able to get it working with this code.  Perhaps you can adapt it to your app and change the names where needed?

Form Properties

Datasource: BookingsTable
Items: LookUp(BookingsTable,ID=some_value)

ComboBox properties

DisplayFields: ["Senior_x0020_Advisor"]
SearchFields: ["Senior_x0020_Advisor"]
Items: AdvisorsTable
DefaultSelectedItems: RenameColumns(Split(Parent.Default,","),"Result","Senior_x0020_Advisor")

Card properties

Default:
ThisItem.'MyAdvisor'

Update:
Left(
    Concat(ComboBox1.SelectedItems,'Senior Advisor'& ","),
    Len(Concat(ComboBox1.SelectedItems,'Senior Advisor'& ","))-1
)

Let me know if you require further instruction.

(The issue seemed to be the last comma at the end of the Text string so my Update code removes this)

@Anonymous

Could it just be a simple typo?  I noticed that your function has 3 arguments.  Concat only requires 2 arguments.

Concat(SeniorAdvisorCombo.SelectedItems ,Value, " , ")

I think you can just replace the comma with an & symbol and it will work.
Concat(SeniorAdvisorCombo.SelectedItems ,Value&" , ")

@mdevaneyhi,

If I do that it tells me "Name isn't valid. This identifier isn't recognized. This error appears most commonly when a formula refers to something that no longer exists (for example, a control that you have deleted"

@Anonymous

Are you sure the control called "SeniorAdvisorCombo" exists?  That error will pop up when PowerApps cannot find the ComboBox.

Suggest you delete and retype SeniorAdvisorCombo in your Concat formula to see if PowerApps is finding it.  I assume this is where you are getting a red underline in the formula bar.

(Its nice to see you here again)

@mdevaneyNice to see you too, thank you for all the help 🙂

I am afraid it is still the same errors I receive. I carefully deleted, added and retyped all the Property formulas, but it still gives me the same error.

@Anonymous

Would it be possible to give me all the information needed to recreate your SeniorAdvisorCombo?  Maybe the best way for me to help troubleshoot is to model the problem for myself.

You've already given some of this information.  Could you please make a post with all of this so I can try it for myself?  Of course the sample data can be fake as long as its in the same format.

  • Items Property (from the ComboBox)
  • Sample Data (from the Excel spreadsheet)
  • DefaultSelectedItems property (from the ComboBox)
  • Update property (from the Card)

@mdevaneyyes definitely:

  • Items Property (from the ComboBox)

SeniorAdvisorSPM.'Senior Advisor'

I do .'Senior Advisor' because I have more than one column in the table of my excelsheet.

  • Sample Data (from the Excel spreadsheet)

SeniorAdvisorSPM.JPG

The above picture is what the SeniorAdvisorSPM table in our excelsheet looks like. In our PowerApp, we can both add Senior Advisors to a BrowseGallery and I would like to just be able to add one or more (hence the combobox) of Senior Advisors to our Projects in the MainTableSPM. Therefore I would like to Concat() them into one single cell.

  • DefaultSelectedItems property (from the ComboBox)

If(EditForm1.Mode = FormMode.Edit, RenameColumns(Split(Parent.Default,","),"Result","Value"),Table())

This way seems to work when I set the items property of the combobox to a simple ["a","b","c"], not when I drag data from a table.

  • Update property (from the Card)

Concat(ComboBox3.SelectedItems,Value& " , ")

Concat(ComboBox3.SelectedItems,Value, " , ")

Have tried both of the above, each giving me the above mentioned errors.

@Anonymous

I am looking at this problem a little bit differently now that I see your spreadsheet.  If you are pulling data from the column named 'Senior Advisor' into the ComboBox I wonder if we should be referencing that instead of Value.

Try this code and make sure the field name matches the column name in your spreadsheet.

Concat(SeniorAdvisorCombo.SelectedItems ,'Senior Advisor'&", ")

If it does not work I will have to build out the solution from scratch.  Let me know.

Hi @mdevaney ,

That does somewhat work. As it can be seen below on the screenshots, if I choose to random Senior Advisors, they will perfectly well get logged into the field:

SeniorAdvisorSPM1.JPGSeniorAdvisorSPM2.JPG

However, when I once again edit the project, which we often do as information gets updated etc., the fields in the combobox look like this:

SeniorAdvisorSPM3.JPGSeniorAdvisorSPM4.JPG

If I save the project again, suddenly all the senior advisors are deleted and it adds a "blank" field.

@Anonymous

I built an example with 2 tables

AdvisorsTable

  • 'Senior Advisor' -  has the name of the advisor

BookingsTable

  • ID - a unique number for the booking
  • MyAdvisor - a text string with one or more names separate by comma (e.g. "Erin Smith, James Connor")

Items: AdvisorsTable
DefaultSelectedItems: RenameColumns(Split(Parent.Default,","),"Result","Senior_x0020_Advisor")

Card properties

Default:
ThisItem.'MyAdvisor'

Update:
Left(
    Concat(ComboBox1.SelectedItems,'Senior Advisor'& ","),
    Len(Concat(ComboBox1.SelectedItems,'Senior Advisor'& ","))-1
)

Let me know if you require further instruction.

(The issue seemed to be the last comma at the end of the Text string so my Update code removes this)
