Conditionally Hide Text Boxes Based of another Text not being empty

Ok...I'm completely dying over here trying to figure out what would be amazingly simple in InfoPath. Here is my scenario

  • I have 2 text boxes (TextBox1 and TextBox2)
  • They are by default empty
  • If TextBox 1 is empty, I do not want users to see TextBox 2
  • If TextBox 1 is not empty then I want

I can get text box 2 to disappear if Text box 1 is empty; however, I can not get it to reappear when text box 1 gets filled in

How can something so simple be escaping me...it's rather embarassing. Help please.

Hi @pnthrzrule, it is even easier in PowerApps.

Set the Visible property of TextBox2 as this:

!IsBlank(TextBox1.Text)

Please let me know how you get on.

PS I just noticed the typo, I meant to say TextBox2, now corrected.  Apologies for leading you astray.

Thanks for the quick reply...but I need box 1 to be visible always. Box 2 would only show if box 1 was populated. It's way easier in InfoPath...already solved in InfoPath...still working on PowerApps. I don't typically like to complain here...but something so simple shouldn't be so difficult.

Also...anytyime I add .text at the end of a field name or card name I get the invalid argument red ink

@pnthrzrule

Set the Visible property of TextBox2 to:

!IsBlank(TextBox1.Text)

and the Visible property of TextBox1 to:

true

this will allow TextBox1 to allways be Visible, but TextBox2 will only be visible when TextBox1 is populated.

.text must be .Text (with a captial T)

I will try it....also...should I be playing with the visibility of the Data Card control or the Textbox input control?

Probably the TextBox

Okay...here's the deal. I got it to work and here are my learnings

1. If you want to hide both the label and the field - you must focus on Data Card visibility...not just the field alone

2. Also...the formula must get applied to the DataCardVALUE....not just the DataCard

So here is the formula applied to Text box 2's DataCardValue

!IsBlank(DataCardValue.Text)

GOOD GRIEF!!!

I've never felt dumber...except for that one time I got served divorce papers.

Actually it's not the textbox (field) name that needs to be in the formula. It's the DataCardValue that worked out for me.

  • Each textbox (field) lives inside its own DataCard.
  • From my understanding, the DataCard contains the field and the field name (physically speaking that is).
  • Also, there are properties within each DataCard.
  • One of those properties is the DataCardValue.
  • The DataCardValue shows up in italics inside the formula. Here is what worked for me in the following scenario

TextBox1 is a field that lives inside DataCard1

TextBox2 is a field that lives inside DataCard2

Here is how you hide TextBox2 (and its label which is in essence the entire DataCard) if the value in TextBox1 is blank

If(IsBlank(DataCardValue1.Text),false,true)

Please let me know if you notice any errors in the above.

I was able to follow these steps but decided to rename the DataCard so that I could easily find it again later.  However, if I change the card from read only to read-write, the name gets changed and all my formulas break.

Anyone else seeing this issue?

My example:

  • DataCard17 - Contains a textbox for a field called Branch in my sharepoint list.
    • When I click the card in the layout, it shows "Card:Branch"
  • I rename the DataCard17 --> DataCardBranch
  • I set my formula on another card to make it visible=false if the Branch = "Calgary"
  • If I make the DataCardBranch "Edit Text", (using the sidebar) the DataCard is now renamed to DataCard4
  • If I change the card to "View Text" it is renamed again to DataCard18
  • This is wreaking havoc with my formula!
