Why not, they are both equally structured datasources.

And if it is naughty why no error while coding (red curly line)?

Hi @HansHeintz 

If you look at the formula reference for Filter you can see that the syntax is:
Filter( Table, Formula1 [, Formula2, ... ] )
whereas you have

Filter( Formula 1)

It also doesn't look like you're filtering, but that you are trying to choose a dataset depending on the UseCached boolean, so what you'd want to do is rewrite to something like the following:

If(UseCached; CachedTableCollection; RealTable);

I'm going to assume this is the Items value for some object, so if UsedCached is set to true, then the items will be the cached table, otherwise the real table.

Could you give that a try and let me know whether this resolves your issue? If not then could you please explain in a bit more detail what you are trying to achieve and where?

I do not really see the difference except you left of Filter(
You say If(UseCached;CachedTableCollection;RealTable); is a formula not a table.

So if I set the text property of a label to

If(BoolVar;"Yes";"No")

You might say I use a Formula when I should use a string.

What is not working either is

UpdateContext({DataToUse:If(UseCached;CachedTableCollection;RealTable)})

and then Filter(DataToUse;...

No error, but no go.

);

so if we explain this as a written story:

If( the condition is met for when to use cached (UseCached);
    then used the Cached Table Collection (CachedTableCollection);

    otherwise use the Real Table (RealTable)
);

This depends entirely on what you are using to define 'UseCached' - what is UseCached to you and how have you implemented it? I only referenced a Table in my previous reply because your formula has a collection called CachedTableCollection.

We are not filtering anything in the above example.

If you could explain to me how you think your example should be filtered, then I can help to guide you better 🙂

Filter would normally be used when we want to filter one of those collections, such as this:

If(UseCached
      &&
   CurrentUserOnly;
   Filter(CachedTableCollection,
          CurrentUserEmail = User().Email
   );
   Filter(RealTable,
          CurrentUserEmail = User().Email
   );
)

and so if we explain this as a written story:

    and  (&&)

    we are only showing records for the current user (CurrentUserOnly);
    then Filter ( and use the Cached Table Collection (CachedTableCollection),

          with records where the CurrentUserEmail field

          equals the current user's email (User().Email) );

    otherwise Filter ( and use the Real Table (RealTable),
          with records where the CurrentUserEmail field

          equals the current user's email (User().Email) );
)

But a boolean variable can be used without the if or string, as it will evaluate and display true or false:

Text property of label:
BoolVar

In regards to your last question, could you perhaps provide your actual formula rather than pseudocode? and have you looked at what value is being assigned to DataToUse to establish what is not being set correctly in the formula?
