Gallery performance issue

Hello 👋

I am building a pretty complex app to optimize new collaborator arrival for HR and IT service.

During my development, I was using pretty simple galleries and 5 to 10 SharePoint List Items.

The gallery I'm building for IT is pretty complex, with many controls. I was pretty happy with the result, until I added 50 records to the SharePoint List and discovered the poor performances of the gallery. The page takes ages to load, scrolling if stuttering a lot, and I'm starting to think that PowerApps may not be the correct choice for this usage.

Here is a screenshot of the gallery :

Sans titre-1.jpg

This is a flexible height gallery, with an accordion which shows some more controls. Items in the list just show text with "ThisItem.ColumnName.Value" and some coloured circle that changes based on the value of some columns in the SharePoint List. In the accordion, I added more control to patch and update list items.

For now, this page is pointless since it is aimed to replace an Excel sheet which can handle those data better than PowerApps...

Is there anything I can do to have better overall performances ?

Here is the result of a page load in the monitor :

Thank you for your help 🙂

Hi @Jedediah ,

Based on the view of monitor, the App took more than 1 minute to grab all items in the nine Dropdowns:

What are you using as the data source in these dropdowns? It seems all of them have a LookUp column, which leaded to the bad performance.

Hello and thank you for your help !

I'm starting to think there is a bigger issue here.

I just cleared monitor lines, opened the page which include the gallery, and it seems like my app is making calls from controls that are not on this page :

Sans titre-3.jpg

None of the yellow items are displayed nor used by the page I'm opening here.

As for the dropdown you asked, here they are :

The other ones (not in this page) are simple dropdowns added by forms.

Thank you 🙂

Hi @Jedediah ,

Is the ADUser column of 'Nouveaux Arrivants' table a LookUp column or a Choices column? How many items are there in each Dropdown? It seems like a LookUp column, then I would recommend use Combo box than Dropdown because Combo box would be easier to use for updating LookUp column. If using Combo box, the Patch function would be:

Patch('Nouveaux Arrivants'; ThisItem; {ADUser: Combobox.Selected})

Combo box Items property is the same as Dropdown, but DefaultSelectedItems would be

ThisItem.ADUser

Then, please check below options in settings, since you have a lot of Controls hidden in Gallery:

vjefferni_1-1690881752300.png

vjefferni_2-1690882014967.png

At last, please do not use SelectedText in OnChange properties of all Dropdowns, use Selected.Value instead.

To be honest, if the table 'Nouveaux Arrivants' includes many LookUp columns, and the lists being look up are also large, it's not recommended that modify items in the Gallery. One of the most important factors that affect performance is the quantity of Controls on a Screen, not to say that so many Dropdowns in the Gallery need to get values from other data sources.

Maybe you can also make another test. On a blank new screen, add a Gallery with the simple layout, check how long will it take to load all the data.

Hey !

ADUser and all other dropdown in the gallery are Choices columns.

I have two Lookup columns in the SP List, but they are only displayed in the gallery with a label control and are linked in SP to simple lists.

Using Selected.Value seems imposible :

The settings you are listing are enabled.

I already tried to create a blank gallery using the predefined designs and the gallery loads correctly with minimal scroll issue. Adding text label controls seems to have a light impact.

I also tried to duplicate my gallery and remove the "accordion" part which is the one with all the actionnable controls. I also have the issue.

Is it normal that I see calls from controls that are not on the page I open ?

Some news :
I found what was causing all the calls with the dropdowns on other pages : I am refreshing the data source 'Nouveaux arrivants' when the pages that contains a gallery are opened.

Seems like this also refresh all the dropdown and galleries that use this datasource even if they aren't displayed.

Anything  I can do for this ?

As for my gallery, it is still unusable but the monitor screen is cleaner now :

All the first successes on 'DateSortie' are because the column is empty for lot of the records (expected behaviour, I control the visibility of the control based on they are blank or not).

Hi @Jedediah ,

You mean, even the duplicate Gallery without the "accordion" part, the Gallery still have bad performance? If this is the case, you can try and duplicate the Gallery again, just remove the icons/images/circles from Gallery template one by one. I suspect the problem is due to too many controls in a single template, let's check it out.

Hello @v-jefferni !

Yes, that's what I meant. I cleaned the gallery even more by removing :

- All icons

- All conditioned control display.

So now, I only have some texts labels, directly linked to columns via "ThisItem.XXX" :

Jedediah_0-1690964795933.png

I can't deny it's better than before, but it's still not usable from a user standpoint.

Scroll in the gallery takes 3 to 4 seconds to load items that are not displayed on the screen.

Edit : I replaced my gallery with a blank horizontal gallery and added all the text labels I was using (and only that). No issue at all, scroll is pretty fast. So I'm starting to think that my issue could be related to the fact I use a lot of container in my gallery since it's the only difference between the two.

Can confirm : adding a single container to the newly created gallery as a huge impact on scroll performances.

What do you think ?

Hello @v-jefferni 🙂

So what do you think ?

Hi @Jedediah ,

I cannot reproduce this issue, may be due to database difference. I suggest you raise a support ticket.
