How do I reset a combo box?

The question is simple if the form is simple. I have an edit form and I used Reset(ControlName) to reset it back to blank. That all works fine. My issue is when I get to my gallery page. When I select a gallery item it sets a global variable with the record. Then I have a form on that page that gets populated with the record from the global variable. In this case it appears that Reset(ControlName) doesn't work. I assume it might have to do with how those combo boxes are set up. What would be a workaround to reset a control (combo box) when another combo box is changed?

Hi @futr_vision

That is correct. That's why I ask essentially saying hey you are saying its default is blank but its not blank.

So your answer is, then becomes, yes you have to blank out the Default global variable

If the combobox etc is on the same screen, in the second combobox why not simply check directly if the 1st combo is blank or if not do whatever based on the selection? I would avoid using globals to do this, even across screens.

Across screens pass the value in the Navigate function so its a Context not global and same screen, just read from the 1st

Its not that it doesn't work, but when you bind a data value to a control the Default or DefaultSelectedItems or Text will be set on reset

So if you load a record with Name column = Michael

And pretend you can type in something

If you reset it it won't be blank it will be Michael

Same for ComboBoxes etc,

Can you please show where its not working when the Default or Defaultitems is BLANK and you reset and it doesnt stay blank?

I don't believe there is an instance where either of those are blank. Since this form is using a global variable to populate the combo box do I need to somehow set the column in the global variable's record to blank which in turn would set the combo box to blank?

For exmaple, if the global variable name is glbFormData and the column for the combo box I want to be blank is name then I need to set the OnChange of the other combo box to something that makes glbFormData.Name to blank?

@FLMike

Thanks. A couple things to cover here.

  1. I used the global variable to populate the form after selecting a gallery item. I figured that was the easiest way because using the gallery item wasn't quite working correctly. I can change the global variable to a context variable. I believe that would also work, correct?
  2. I can check to see if the first combo box is blank, however, it is never blank. It either has a value in it already or the value is changed while editing. The second combo box should be wired up to become blank on the OnChange of the first combo box. The reason I need to blank the second combo box is because it is dependent on the first.

Hi @futr_vision

Sounds good. Let me answer below

1. Yes, Context would work, or checking the control (I know you said you had an issue). I am not 1000000% against Globals, as long as you have a good naming convention. Since PA is limited on "context" of variables, if its a true global, like _MyVariable or mMyVariable etc. then local would be lMyVariable lol by it looks like an i and isn't hehe

2. I am hehe a little confused, you said that Combo 1 is never blank, so if its not blank, then Combo 2 won't ever be blank, it will simply default filter itself to whatever the default (reset) value is of Combo 1, right???

@FLMike

What I mean that combo box 1 is never blank is that it is a required field. In the case of a new record a use needs to change it from blank or change it from its current value to another value. Same with the form in edit mode where the form is being populated by the global variable. Because that combo box was required when creating the record there will always be a value there unless the user removes it. Whether the user removed the value or changes to another value I need combo box 2 to be reset or set to blank. Does that make sense? Combo box 2 is dependent on combo box 1 so you can understand why I need combo box 2 reset or set to blank.
