How to apply error checking values to Field A based on the value or lack of value in field B

Good Afternoon Hive Mind.

I am looking to apply a little more logic to my powerapps forms I have built out in SharePoint in which I can apply error checking to field A based on the lack of a value in field B.

By this I mean for example I would like the user to not be able to apply a status of Completed to my form if the Finance system ID is blank. At the moment I get round this having created a wf in power automate that sends an error email to the finance manager describing this scenario. However it would be a much more eloquent solution if status of Completed could not be achieved without certain fields being completed. Another obvious one is Has Attachments? I would like to prevent the status of a powerapps sp form to not validate on Completed until an attachment has been applied. It saves on email which can from time to time be lost.

Status field is a simple Choice field and finance id a simple numeric string field. Any advice of how to affect the validation of status based on the lack of (or wrong) selection in another field would be gratefully received.

cheers

phil

Hi Warren

Thankyou for sticking with me on this. Finally got this working and I am very pleased with the result.

If(
DataCardValue2.Selected.Value="3-Completed" &&
CountRows(DataCardValue18.Attachments)=0,
Notify(
"Contract missing. Please add contract paperwork in the Attach Contract Section",
NotificationType.Error
);
Reset(DataCardValue2)
)

Hi @pcoombe ,

Firstly the IsBlank() function can be used to test whether a field or control contains information. There are potential Delegation issues with a field, but a control containing this field can be tested without issues. As for attachments, you can also add this with CountRows(). On the OnChange of your control that applies status put this

If(
   (
      Self.Selected.Value="Completed" &&
      IsBlank(This Item.'Finance System ID'
   ) ||
   CountRows(ThisItem.Attachments)=0,
   Notify(
      "You need to complete xxxx field" and add an attachment,
      NotificationType.Error
   ),
   Reset(Self)
)

Happy to assist further.

Hi @WarrenBelz

Apologies for not responding sooner. I am not sure that solution is what I am looking for or rather I am not sure how to get the formula to work for me.

so I want to use a combination of where Has_attachments = no then error when status is put into '3-Completed'

Hi @pcoombe ,

This more a logic than a coding syntax issue - maybe

If(
   Self.Selected.Value="Completed" &&
   CountRows(ThisItem.Attachments)=0,
   Notify(
      "You need to add an attachment,
      NotificationType.Error
   );
   Reset(Self)
)

Hi @WarrenBelz

I think the problem i am having is trying to understand what my self.selected.Value and ThisItem.Attachments would be in the scenario below. I have attached a screenshot as my status value is applied to Datacardvalue2 but if I attempt to update the formula you provided, this still errors.

If(
DataCardValue2.Value="3-Completed" &&
CountRows(ThisItem.Attachments)=0,
Notify(
"You need to add an attachment,
NotificationType.Error
);
Reset(Self)

Hi @pcoombe ,

Firstly where are you putting this code? My suggestion was on the OnChange of the drop-down (hence the reference to Self).

If you are running this from a Button outside the form, you need (Note the Selected addition)

If(
   DataCardValue2.Selected.Value="3-Completed" &&
   CountRows(AttachmentControlName.Attachments)=0,
   Notify(
      "You need to add an attachment,
      NotificationType.Error
   );
   Reset(DataCardValue2)
)

Hi warren

It looks like the formula is erroring due to the number of arguments. If you look at my screenshots you can see I have the formula on my status field using OnChange but the error msg I am getting is 'function countrows has some invalid arguments'

@pcoombe ,

You need to change AttachmentControlName to the actual name of  your Attachment Control.

Hi Again

I am just using out of the box 'Has attachments' as my control. the problem is now that the =0 value is the incorrect type. Has Attachments expects true/false, but if I use 'False' as my value i.e. datacardvalue17 I get a new error as per screenshot. So if I cannot use numerics and I cannot use true/flase, I am not sure what I need here

If(
DataCardValue2.Selected.Value="3-Completed" &&
CountRows(DataCardValue17.Attachments)="false",
Notify(
"You need to add an attachment,
NotificationType.Error
);
Reset(DataCardValue2)
)
