PowerApps Performance on Load slow - when data card contains choice or lookup in edit mode

Hi,

Having an issue with PowerApps performance

Whenever i add a data form (edit/new) to powerapps and if the form data cards include a column of type Choice or Lookup and the data card for the same is in edit lookup mode - the powerapp takes a lot of time on startup and keeps loading the references and slows down the performance of the app (the choice column only has 2 values - so it does not even have loads of data to traverse)

Also, the moment i chnage the data card type to View Lookup for the choice or lookup field - the powerapp load performance is flawless

Regards,

Reza

Hi rezadurrani28,

Do you mean that your app will load slowly when there is a Choice/Lookup field on the EditForm? How long does it take to load the app?

I assume the data source of your app should be a SharePoint list, how many data are there in the list?

I have tried to open an app which is based on SharePoint list, seems that I don’t get the slow load issue.

Best regards,
Mabel Mao

Hi

The sharepoint list has greater than 5k items
It has a choice column
When i add the choice column on the edit form on the app - it causes the app to load very slow (approx 1 min before all the data is loaded on the app)

When i put the same data card as view text - the app loads fast

Hi, not sure if you are just stating a fact or if you are looking for a solution..

I'd advise to only pull a smaller amount of data at a time rather than all 5k records.. I suggest using the FirstN() and/or LastN() functions to do this. Perhaps pull  25 at time - for example, then have a button below which says "next", have this button fetch the next 25 entries.

See here: https://powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/tutorials/function-first-last/

Can you tell us whats the objective of your App pulling 5K of data, we can give you ideas on how to optimize it.

Just a warning, a Complex type column, especially a lookup adds to the threshold on PowerApps and Flow. It means of course you will be pulling much more than 5K depending on what the lookup field points to.

The sharepoint list has > 5k items
The list has a column of type choice - with values Pending,Approved,Rejected

In powerapps when i create a new item form and include the data card for the choice column (which is a complex type)
When i load the app for the first time - it takes around 1 min before im able to see the values for lookup type

If i edit the data card for the choice column - and make it view lookup
Then the app load takes only a few seconds

Lookup field in this case is just a simple choice column with 3 values - approved, rejected, pending

Yes, Its still adds to the lookup threshold. Can you tell us whats the objective of your App pulling 5K of data

Its a simple app

Users will contribute data to a list in sharepoint
I just added the New form control for the list

Does your sharepoint list adopt permissions of

  1. view and edit by all?
  2. view and edit only by creator?

Does the items on the list reach completion as in Status?

  1. Not started
  2. In progress
  3. Complete

If so, you can use that to query only those items by

  1. Current user
  2. In Progress

If you need to interact with more you can get the app to re calculate at that point. You can build collections, You can write data locally in app. All this Instead of everything at once Onstart.

You see how I'm thinking of ways to be focused in terms of what data to bring in?

Come up with some deatails, then you can test it or troubleshooting.
