STOP with the modern command bar

Enough already with the modern command bar.   This thing is garbage and now it defaults no matter what you set in the settings.  It has to be changed back every time you go into an app.  The biggest thing missing is you can't see what databases are currently attached to your app.  I've clicked on everything and you can only add a new data source.  You have to go to the legacy ribbon, enable the old command bar and bam, there's the whole list of data sources in your app.

Stop with the modern command bar as a default.  If you can't include something this simple, it's garbage.

So yes, I did open a support ticket and they did provide a working solution very quickly.  This is their solution....

  1. Open your App in edit mode. Click on App Settings > General > Turn on the toggle “Improve data source experience and Microsoft Dataverse Views”
  2. rjchar_0-1678978119236.png

  3. It can ask you to turn on other feature(s) as well like “Turn on ‘Use Column Display Names”. Just turn this on first the former toggle after it.
  4. You will get the “Data” tab on the left hand side.

So this does work... but, you have to do this to EACH app.  Also, in order to enable this feature, you first have to enable 2 other features first.

1 - under UPCOMING FEATURES / RETIRED, you have to enable Relational data, option sets, and other new features for Microsoft Dataverse

2 - under UPCOMING FEATURES / PREVIEW, you have to enable Use column display names.

Once you enable these 2 items, then you can enable the Improve data source experience and Microsoft Dataverse views under GENERAL settings.  Very strange fix because the apps that are having this issue don't use Dataverse.  They use SharePoint only.  But it does work and it will enable the Data icon on the left edge of the screen.  Just very strange....

Hi @rjchar ,

It is the third icon on the left as below

I appreciate the help, but I don't have that icon.    Can I add it?

Hi @rjchar ,

Wierd - it should simply be there, although you can also use the Add Data drop-down I can see you have at the top.

The legacy ribbon is too good but new Morden command bar is very, very pathetic.

I've also tried several things to see if it's my laptop that is causing the missing icon.  I keep very tight reigns on what my laptop interacts with and how it talks to the web.

- disabled all ad blockers / filters - failed

- disabled all IP filters, virus blockers - failed

- different web browser - Chrome vs FireFox - failed

- So, go nuclear and use a different laptop - failed

All the ideas above, all failed to show me the database icon on the left hand edge with the modern command bar.   So our companies account has 3 different environments setup.  When I switch to the other environments and edit an app, the database icon is there.  I go back to my icon and edit an app, it's not there.

So as background, I've created so many apps (100+) over the last few years that when a new project comes up, I almost always have an app that is similar already.  So I normally just edit an old app, resave it as a new one, delete screens, add screens, make whatever changes needed to fit the new project.   So this leads to a new idea....

If I create a brand new blank app from nothing, the database icon is there on the left edge.  If I edit an old app to use on a new project, the database icon on the left is NOT there.  So now the question is WHY?  And I think only someone from Microsoft can answer this question.  This is a very very weird bug in their PowerApps system and I wish I could find a way around it.  I really have no desire to completely recreate my apps from scratch from a blank.  I'm usually under a time crunch to have an app up and running within hours.  I get the requirements and usually with hours, the project is starting up.  To start from scratch, could take days to get all the little details from a blank app up and running.

Anyone's thoughts?

Hi @rjchar ,

You have done better than most and identified when the issue rears its head (I have never seen it here - Australia - - either new or old apps). A good start would be to lodge a Support Ticket with Microsoft and see if they can shed some light on it.

I agree with @rjchar the entire Power apps and Power automate platform is pathetic and garbage. Even the Power automate flow editor is too buggy and slow. Everything here is sucks
